About Swizzels Mega Drumstick Lolly

About Swizzels Mega Drumstick Lolly

Every British childhood has a Drumstick in it somewhere, usually stuck to a jumper. This is the Swizzels Mega Drumstick Lolly, and it is the big one.

The chewy lolly on a stick you bought with pocket money from the corner shop, then made last the whole walk home. Then most of Saturday morning.

The Mega simply means more of it, which means more time with nobody talking while they work through it. Parents may have views on that. They should be grateful.

It is the proper UK one from Swizzels, and it ships from within Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Swizzels Mega Drumstick Lolly

Q: How big is the Mega Drumstick?

A: Bigger than the regular Drumstick, which is the whole point. It is a single 28g lolly on a stick, individually wrapped.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: Very. Tuck one into a parcel for anyone who grew up in Britain and watch them go quiet for a moment. It also earns its place in a party bag.

Q: What else from Swizzels do people buy with it?

A: Love Hearts, Refreshers and Parma Violets are the usual companions. Between them they cover most of a British sweet-shop childhood.

More about Swizzels Mega Drumstick Lolly

The Drumstick belongs to the old corner-shop counter, the shelf of jars and penny sweets where a small fortune in change could last a surprisingly long time. It sits in that line-up with Love Hearts and Parma Violets, the sweets nobody had to explain to anybody.

People in Canada go looking for it because a taste can do what a photo cannot. You unwrap one and you are eight, standing outside a newsagent in the rain, entirely content. Plenty of people buy one for themselves and claim it was for the kids.

It is a single lolly in its own wrapper, a bigger take on the usual Drumstick. It keeps happily in a cool, dry cupboard, slips into a lunchbox or a party bag, and survives being carried around in a coat pocket for a week, which is how most of them are eaten.

Swizzels make a whole counter's worth of British sweets, so a Drumstick rarely travels alone. People tend to pick it up alongside Love Hearts, Refreshers or Parma Violets and build themselves a small, very nostalgic pile.

The story of Swizzels Mega Drumstick Lolly

The lolly you made last

You know the one. A Drumstick was what you bought with the change at the corner shop on the way home, then tried to make last as long as humanly possible, which was never as long as you planned. Swizzels make it themselves, up in New Mills, Derbyshire, where the firm has been since 1940. Same firm, same stick, same argument in the back of the car about who got the bigger one.

It started on a market stall

It began in the early 1920s with two brothers, Maurice and Alfred Matlow, selling jellied sweets from a market stall in Hackney, London. By 1928 they had built a small factory in east London, trading as Matlow Brothers and turning out jellies and chews. In 1933 they merged with a rival factory owner, David Dee, whose speciality was fizzy compressed tablet sweets. Rivals, then partners. The name Swizzels Matlow Ltd did not turn up until 1975, so clearly nobody was in a hurry.

Bombed out, moved north

The 1940 Blitz pushed the whole business out of London to a disused wick factory in New Mills, Derbyshire. Most people move house and keep a few boxes packed, just in case. Swizzels moved a sweet factory and stayed put. Love Hearts arrived in 1954, Drumstick lollies followed in 1957, and together with Parma Violets they are now the company's highest-selling brands. It is still run by members of both the founding Dee and Matlow families.

The Drumstick gets ideas

In 2012 Swizzels took the Drumstick somewhere new with Drumstick Squashies, foam-like chewy sweets with the same flavour as the original lolly. The original carried on regardless, on its stick, where it belongs. Swizzels say they have been making their sweets, Drumsticks included, for over 90 years. That is a lot of sticky fingers in a lot of school playgrounds, and a fair few grown adults quietly buying one for themselves and calling it nostalgia.
