About Diddly Squat Farm Piccalilli

About Diddly Squat Farm Piccalilli

Every ham sandwich deserves a bit of yellow. Diddly Squat Farm Piccalilli brings it, from the farm half of Britain watched Jeremy Clarkson try, and regularly fail, to run.

Piccalilli is the jar that splits a table. Half of it thinks it is far too sharp. The other half says nothing and quietly takes the lot.

If you grew up with it next to a pork pie or a wedge of cheddar, you already know which half you are in. One spoonful on the side of the plate and suddenly it is a ploughman's.

Cold meats, cheese, a crusty roll. The jar does the rest.

Frequently asked questions about Diddly Squat Farm Piccalilli

Q: Is this the UK piccalilli from Diddly Squat Farm?

A: Yes, it is the British jar with the Diddly Squat Farm name on it, the farm from Clarkson's Farm. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada, so there is no waiting on a parcel from the other side of the Atlantic.

Q: What do people eat piccalilli with?

A: Ham, pork pie, cheese and a ploughman's are the classics. Some people put it in a cheese sandwich and refuse to discuss it further.

Q: Is it a good gift for a Clarkson's Farm fan?

A: It is about the most useful thing with the farm's name on it you can give someone. They get to watch the show and eat the pickle, which is more than Jeremy managed in some episodes.

More about Diddly Squat Farm Piccalilli

Piccalilli lives in the same corner of British food as the pub ploughman's, the buffet table and the leftovers on a Monday. It is the bright yellow one, sat next to the brown pickle, and it is always the jar people either fight over or pass straight on.

In Canada it gets searched for by two sorts of people. There are the ones who miss a proper piccalilli with their cold cuts, and there are the ones who have watched every episode of Clarkson's Farm and want something with the Diddly Squat name on it in the cupboard. Plenty of people are both.

It comes in a 340g jar, a good size for a few weekends of sandwiches. Unopened, it sits in the cupboard with the rest of the pickles; once it is open, follow what the lid tells you. Serve it straight from the jar with a spoon in it, the way it has always been done.

It sits happily alongside a British cheddar, a block of crackers and whatever ham is in the fridge. Put the lot on a board and call it lunch.

The story of Diddly Squat Farm Piccalilli

A jar with opinions

Piccalilli does not do subtle. It sits on the plate next to a wedge of cheese and a slice of pork pie and makes everything else look shy. You either grew up with a jar in the fridge door, or you grew up wondering why your dad got so excited about it. This one carries the Diddly Squat name, as in Jeremy Clarkson's farm near Chipping Norton. The official shop site says its jams, chutneys and condiments are homemade using produce from Diddly Squat Farm. So it arrives with a story attached.

Named after nothing much

Clarkson bought about a thousand acres near Chipping Norton in 2008, land that was formerly part of the Sarsden estate. A local villager contract-farmed it until his retirement in 2019, and then Clarkson began farming it himself. He renamed it Diddly Squat to indicate its lack of productivity, the phrase being slang for the least amount, or nothing. Honest, at least. Clarkson's Farm on Amazon Prime Video then made it internationally known, which is a lot of fame for a place named after nothing.

Forty tonnes of potatoes later

The farm shop was Clarkson's idea after he accidentally produced 40 tonnes of potatoes. Accidentally. He and Lisa Hogan opened the Diddly Squat Farm Shop in 2020, and it became known for drawing very long visitor queues. It also faced a two-month closure after a council dispute over the roofing material used on the building, which is about as British as a row gets. Products are produced on the farm itself or by neighbouring businesses in the Cotswolds, so the neighbours are in on it too.

From the queue to the cupboard

In 2024 Diddly Squat Farm Shop products went nationwide through Amazon Fresh, the first time they were sold on the UK high street. There is also Hawkstone Lager, created from barley grown on the farm after a cut in government farm subsidies in 2021. Piccalilli, though, belongs at the table. Cold ham, crusty bread, a jar in the middle, and one person who always takes far too much. You know who you are.
