About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Walker's Nonsuch Toffee Duo With Hammer

About Walker's Nonsuch Toffee Duo With Hammer

There is no polite way to eat slab toffee. You hit it. Walker's Nonsuch Toffee Duo With Hammer comes with the tool for the job, so nobody has to go hunting for the rolling pin.

The hammer is the bit everyone remembers: the tap on the kitchen table, the crack, the shards skidding off in every direction, and the quiet arguments over who got the big piece.

Then comes the long, slow chew, and conversation is off for a while. Nobody minds.

It is the proper UK toffee, and it ships from within Canada, so all you need to bring is a steady hand.

Frequently asked questions about Walker's Nonsuch Toffee Duo With Hammer

Q: What comes in the pack?

A: A duo of Walker's Nonsuch toffee and a small hammer to break it with. The pack is 200g, which is plenty of cracking for one evening.

Q: Do I actually need the hammer?

A: Technically, no. Spiritually, yes. Half the fun is the crack, and the hammer saves your good kitchen tools from a hard life.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. It is the sort of present that gets opened, recognised and then immediately tested on the coffee table.

Q: How should I keep it once it is open?

A: Wrap what is left back up and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Warm rooms are no friend to toffee.

More about Walker's Nonsuch Toffee Duo With Hammer

In Britain, toffee you break with a hammer belongs to old sweet shops, seaside trips and the drawer at your nan's house. Walker's Nonsuch is one of the names people mean when they say proper toffee.

In Canada, people go looking for it because they remember the noise as much as the taste. The tap, the crack, the one piece that shoots under the fridge and is found three weeks later. A bag of ready-cut chews never quite gives you that.

The pack holds a duo of toffee and a little hammer, 200g in all. Keep it sealed in a cool, dry cupboard and break off what you fancy rather than the lot in one go. Leave it in its wrapper, or lay a tea towel over it before you strike, unless you enjoy finding toffee in odd places for days.

Walker's Nonsuch makes more toffee beyond this one, and it sits well in a parcel next to other British sweets. It also makes a good gift for someone who misses home, mostly because handing a person a hammer always gets a reaction.
