About Thursday Cottage Christmas Chutney

About Thursday Cottage Christmas Chutney

Boxing Day is cold turkey, a wedge of cheese and somebody rummaging in the back of the fridge for the chutney. Be the one who already has it. Thursday Cottage Christmas Chutney is that jar.

It is the spoonful that turns a leftover sandwich into a reason to get off the sofa, and the jar that stays beside the cheeseboard until the board is nothing but crumbs and a lonely grape.

A little jar, so it tucks into a stocking or a parcel for someone who misses a British Christmas. Nobody should have to fight over the last spoonful.

They will anyway.

Frequently asked questions about Thursday Cottage Christmas Chutney

Q: Is this the UK Thursday Cottage chutney?

A: It is. The proper British jar, brought over to Halifax and shipped from within Canada, so your cheeseboard tastes like the ones back home.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is 112g, a little jar. Plenty for a couple of good cheeseboards and the leftover sandwiches that follow, if you share, which you might not.

Q: Is it a good Christmas gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very. It slips into a stocking or a parcel with a bit of cheese, and anyone who grew up with a British Christmas will know exactly what Boxing Day it is meant for.

More about Thursday Cottage Christmas Chutney

In Britain, chutney is the jar that sits next to the cheese and never gets put away. Ploughman's lunches, cold meats, a pork pie cut into wedges: it turns up for all of them. At Christmas it gets its own label, and the cheeseboard is suddenly an event.

Christmas in Canada sorts out the turkey easily enough. It is the bits around it that people miss, and the Boxing Day spread is where the memory really lives. That is why people type Christmas chutney into a search bar in November and feel quietly smug when it turns up.

The 112g jar is small enough to finish before it gets forgotten, and it keeps happily in the cupboard until you open it (after that, do what the label tells you). Spoon it next to a sharp cheddar, smear it inside a cold turkey sandwich, or put it out with crackers and watch it vanish.

It sits nicely beside a block of mature cheese, a pork pie and a box of crackers, which is more or less the whole of Boxing Day. If you are already thinking about pudding, Thursday Cottage make one of those too.

The story of Thursday Cottage Christmas Chutney

The jar that rescues Boxing Day

Christmas dinner gets the applause. Boxing Day does the real work: cold turkey, a wedge of cheese the size of a doorstop, and a fridge door that will not quite shut. That is where a jar of chutney earns its place. If you grew up with a British Christmas, you know the drill. Cold plate, sharp knife, a spoonful on the side, and nobody admitting how many times they went back. This jar carries the Thursday Cottage name, which is a fine start to Christmas in Canada.

It started in an actual cottage

Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. Honest naming, at least. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. It is now an independent part of the Tiptree group, with production based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade. Each boil still produces only about 100 jars. Nobody there is rushing anything.

Friends in very high places

The parent company, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885. It has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911, and currently holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. So the people behind your leftover turkey sandwich have a royal connection. You might want to get the good plate out. Possibly even a napkin.

The rest of the shelf

Thursday Cottage specialises in luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, and the range has a cheeky streak. There is a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky, and a Strawberry Jam with Champagne, which is breakfast behaving as if it has been invited somewhere. The Amaretto Butter is sold as a twist on traditional brandy butter, and there is a handmade Christmas Pudding too. Between them, the British Christmas table is fairly well covered.
