About Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles Tube

About Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles Tube

Try eating one without chewing. You will last about four seconds, and you will swear it was ten.

Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles, in the tube that lived in a coat pocket and came out on every long car journey. Peel the wrapper back, thumb one out, and the argument over who gets the next colour starts all over again.

Firm, fruity and slow to give in, which is the whole charm. A pastille is not a jelly sweet, and anyone who grew up with them will explain the difference at length.

The tube still fits a pocket. Some things should never change.

Frequently asked questions about Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles Tube

Q: Is this the UK version of Fruit Pastilles?

A: Yes, it is the British tube, the one you remember, and it ships from within Canada. No suitcase smuggling required.

Q: How big is the tube?

A: It is the classic 115g tube, the pocket-sized one. Big enough to share, small enough that you will not want to.

Q: What is the Fruit Pastille challenge?

A: Eat one without chewing. It sounds easy until you try it, and nobody has ever managed it with a straight face.

Q: Do they make a good gift?

A: For anyone who grew up in Britain, a tube of Fruit Pastilles in a parcel is a small thing that lands very well. Add a couple of extra tubes, because the first one will not last.

More about Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles Tube

Fruit Pastilles have been a fixture of the British newsagent counter for generations, the tube you grabbed with a paper on the way to the bus. They sit in that small group of sweets nearly everyone in Britain has an opinion about, usually involving which colour is best and who keeps taking it.

People in Canada go looking for them because the memory is so specific: the chew that takes its time, the wrapper you unroll a bit at a time, the last one rattling about at the bottom. You cannot quite describe it to someone who did not grow up with it. You just want the tube.

This is the classic 115g tube, built for pockets, handbags and the glovebox. Unopened, it keeps happily in the cupboard, and once it is open it rarely survives long enough for that to matter. Roll the wrapper back down and it travels well.

Rowntree's is also the name behind Jelly Tots and Randoms, so the pastilles tend to end up in the same basket as other sweets from the same corner of the shop. A few tubes posted to someone who left Britain years ago goes down very well indeed.
