About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Fox's Party Rings Double Pack

About Fox's Party Rings Double Pack

Party Rings are one of those British biscuits that people in Canada do not need to describe when they ask for them. The bright iced rings, the satisfying snap, the way they have appeared on every children's party plate since anyone can remember. Fox's Party Rings are imported from the United Kingdom and available here without waiting on a parcel or hoping a relative packs them sensibly.

This is the Fox's Party Rings Double Pack, 250g, which is to say two packs of the colourful iced shortcake ring biscuits that have been making biscuit tins look cheerful for decades. They are crisp, ring-shaped, and covered in bright icing. One packet has never really been enough, which is presumably why this format exists.

For British expats and anyone who grew up raiding a biscuit tin in the UK, The Great British Shop stocks these as part of a broader range of British groceries shipped across Canada. No hunting through an international aisle for something that might be close. This is the Fox's version people actually recognise.

Fox's Party Rings are made in the United Kingdom and sit firmly in the category of British biscuits that carry a specific kind of weight for anyone who associates them with a school party, a grandparent's kitchen, or a bag being passed around in the back of a car. The 250g double pack is a sensible quantity for anyone who knows how quickly they disappear.

Frequently asked questions about Fox's Party Rings Double Pack

Q: What do Fox's Party Rings taste like?

A: Fox's Party Rings are crisp, sweet shortcake ring biscuits with a thin layer of bright icing on top. The icing is sweet and slightly firm, and the biscuit underneath has that familiar light, crunchy shortcake texture. The colours come from plant, fruit and vegetable concentrates including radish, safflower, apple, carrot, blackcurrant and hibiscus, rather than artificial colours. They are not complicated biscuits, which is rather the point.

Q: Do Fox's Party Rings contain milk or nuts?

A: Fox's Party Rings Double Pack contains wheat and soya, which are listed as allergens. The pack also carries a may-contain warning for milk, nuts and peanuts. There is no milk listed in the ingredients themselves, but the may-contain advisory means the product is made in an environment where those allergens are present. Anyone with a milk, nut or peanut allergy should factor that in before opening the packet.

Q: Are Fox's Party Rings the kind of thing worth putting in a British care package for Canada?

A: They are a strong candidate, partly because they travel well as a dry biscuit and partly because they are the sort of thing people remember very specifically from British childhood parties. The 250g double pack gives you roughly 40 biscuits, which is enough to share without feeling like a sacrifice. For anyone in Canada who grew up with a plate of Party Rings at every birthday, the appeal is less about the biscuit itself and more about the fact that nothing else quite looks like it.
