About Werther's Original Golden Mix

About Werther's Original Golden Mix

Every grandad had a coat pocket with one of these in it, and you could hear the wrapper from two rooms away.

Werther's Original Golden Mix is a big bag of those golden sweets, mixed up so the next one out is a small surprise. You reach in for one. You come out with three.

It is the UK bag, shipped from within Canada, so this time you get to be the one with the pocketful.

Nobody ever asks for a Werther's. They just hold out a hand.

Frequently asked questions about Werther's Original Golden Mix

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 340g bag, so there is plenty to go round. Whether it actually goes round is another matter.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: Very. Anyone who grew up in Britain will know exactly what it is before the paper is fully off, and the grin usually follows.

Q: How should I keep it once it is open?

A: Fold the bag over and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Out of sight helps too, if you want any left by the weekend.

More about Werther's Original Golden Mix

In Britain, Werther's lives in a few very particular places: the glovebox on a long drive, the sweet tin on the sideboard, the handbag that somehow always had one left. It is the sweet of patient grown-ups and well-behaved car journeys.

People in Canada go looking for it because it is the bag they remember. Not a caramel, that caramel, with the gold wrapper and the twist at each end. Plenty of people buy it to become the grandparent in the advert, whether the grandchildren like it or not.

This is a 340g bag of wrapped sweets, which makes it easy to share out and easy to hide. Keep it sealed in a cool, dry cupboard and it will sit there quite happily until someone discovers where you put it. A handful in the car is traditional.

It sits nicely beside a pot of tea and a biscuit tin, or tucked into a parcel of British sweets for someone who misses home. A bowl of these on the coffee table empties faster than anyone will admit.

The story of Werther's Original Golden Mix

Grandad's coat pocket, sorted

Somewhere in Britain, in a coat pocket, there is a Werther's. There always is. You probably remember being handed one in the back of the car, or at the end of a long Sunday visit, with a look that said you had behaved yourself for once. These come from August Storck KG, the German confectioner that owns the Werther's Original brand. Unwrap one and you are about nine again, trying not to crunch it before the next junction.

A town called Werther

August Storck founded the company in 1903 in Werther, Westphalia, Germany. Read the town name again slowly. The founder later changed the family name to Oberwelland, which is exactly the sort of detail that wins a pub quiz and loses a friendship. After the Second World War, a new, larger and more modern production facility was built in Halle, Westphalia. These days the company is headquartered in Berlin, and it is owned by Axel Oberwelland. Same family, different name.

Echte, then Original

The sweet itself arrived in 1969 under the German name Werthers Echte. The international name Werther's Original was adopted in the 1990s for export markets, and that is the name you know. You will remember the adverts, though. From the late 1980s, television in Germany and the UK showed an older man offering a Werther's to a boy. In the British version, that man was the actor Arnold Peters. A whole generation of grandads quietly took notes.

Good company in the cupboard

Storck lists Werther's Original as one of its core brands, alongside Toffifee, merci and RIESEN, so it keeps decent company. In British houses it keeps its own: the glovebox, the handbag, the bowl on the side at your nan's that never seemed to empty. Wherever it lives, it gets passed round. Somebody always takes two and swears they only took one. You know who you are.
