About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Sharwood's Tikka Masala Cooking Sauce

About Sharwood's Tikka Masala Cooking Sauce

Somewhere in Britain right now, someone is browning chicken and reaching for this. Sharwood's Tikka Masala Cooking Sauce is the Friday night curry a lot of us grew up on.

It never pretended to be a restaurant job. It was the one in the cupboard for the nights nobody could be bothered, and somehow those turned into the nights everyone remembers.

Pour it in, let it bubble, get the rice on. Before long the kitchen smells like your mum's house and somebody is already eyeing the pan for seconds.

Tikka masala, the curry Britain decided was its own. This is the jar version you actually know.

Frequently asked questions about Sharwood's Tikka Masala Cooking Sauce

Q: Is this the UK version of Sharwood's Tikka Masala?

A: It is, the same British sauce you would pick up in a UK supermarket. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada, so it never has to clear customs on its way to you.

Q: How big is it?

A: It is a 420g cooking sauce, the standard size you will remember from home. Pour the lot in and you have a proper curry night sorted.

Q: How do people usually use it?

A: Brown some chicken (or whatever you fancy), add the sauce, let it simmer, and serve with rice or naan. That is the whole recipe, and that is rather the point.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. A Sharwood's jar in a parcel says 'Friday night in Britain' better than any card, especially with a packet of poppadoms tucked in beside it.

More about Sharwood's Tikka Masala Cooking Sauce

Ask a room of British people to name a curry and tikka masala comes up first, usually before the question is finished. It is the takeaway order, the pub menu staple, and for years Sharwood's has been the name on the supermarket shelf when people wanted it at home.

People in Canada search for this one because they are not after any curry. They are after that curry: the one from school nights and student flats, the taste you recognise before the lid is fully off. Memory is very specific about these things.

It is a 420g cooking sauce, which means the hard part is already done. Brown your meat or vegetables, pour it over, simmer, serve with rice or naan. Unopened, it sits happily in the cupboard until the night you need it; once it is open, follow what the pack says.

Sharwood's is best known in Britain for its curry sauces, mango chutney and poppadoms, and most people's basket ends up looking like a takeaway order. A tikka masala without a poppadom on the side is technically possible. Nobody recommends it.
