About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Sharwood's Balti Sauce

About Sharwood's Balti Sauce

Friday night, nobody can be bothered, and somebody says the word balti. Sharwood's Balti Sauce is how that ends well.

It is the jar that lived at the back of every British cupboard, waiting for the night the takeaway menu went missing. Brown your meat or veg, pour it in, let it bubble, and the kitchen smells like a curry house on a Saturday.

Rice on, naan warming, the big spoon out for scraping the pan. Somebody always scrapes the pan. Nobody ever admits it.

Frequently asked questions about Sharwood's Balti Sauce

Q: Is this the UK version of Sharwood's Balti Sauce?

A: It is, the British jar from the United Kingdom, the one you remember. We ship it from within Canada, so it never has to cross an ocean to get to your cupboard.

Q: How much does one jar make?

A: The 420g jar does a good family dinner. Add more rice if someone in your house eats like they have not seen food in a week.

Q: What should I serve it with?

A: Rice and a warm naan, at the very least. Mango chutney and poppadoms turn a quick tea into a proper curry night.

More about Sharwood's Balti Sauce

Balti is the curry house regular, the one half of Britain orders without opening the menu. Sharwood's has been the name on the cooking sauce shelf for about as long as anyone can remember, which is why this jar feels less like a shortcut and more like a family habit.

If you are looking for it in Canada, you are probably after one particular taste: the curry night at a mate's flat, the student kitchen, the midweek tea your mum made when she had a day of it. Close enough does not scratch that itch. The one you grew up with does.

It comes in a 420g jar, which handles a proper family dinner without anyone hovering over the last portion. Unopened, it sits happily in the cupboard until you need it. Once it is open, the label tells you how to keep it, and frankly it rarely lasts long enough to matter.

Most people put it in the basket next to a jar of mango chutney and a pack of poppadoms, because a balti without the extras is just tea. Sharwood's makes a whole shelf of curry night, so the rest of the table is easy to sort.
