Colmans English Mustard - 170g

In Britain, English mustard means hot, and Colman's is the one people mean. It is the yellow streak beside the beef, the sharp bit in a ham sandwich, the dab on the side of the plate at a pub lunch.

People in Canada tend to come looking for it at a particular moment. The roast is resting, the gravy is on, and somebody realises the one thing with a proper kick is missing. Or a British recipe asks for a teaspoon of English mustard, and you know exactly which jar it has in mind.

The 170g jar is ready to use straight away, no mixing. A little goes a very long way, so one jar lasts a good while. Stir it into cheese sauce or Welsh rarebit, brush it over a gammon before it goes in the oven, or sneak some into a dressing or a pan of gravy.

It usually ends up in the basket with the rest of the Sunday roast cupboard: gravy granules, mint sauce, a jar of horseradish, and whatever else Yorkshire puddings need to feel at home.
