Camp Chicory & Coffee Essence - 241ml

Camp has sat on British shelves for generations, usually somewhere between the gravy browning and the golden syrup. It is a Scottish original and always a bit of an odd one: part drink, part baking staple, entirely its own thing.

People in Canada go looking for it for one of two reasons. Either they want the milky coffee they were allowed as a kid, or they have a family recipe that says "Camp" in faded biro and flatly refuses to work without it.

The 241ml bottle lives in the cupboard with the lid on tight, and a little goes a long way. A teaspoon or two in a mug of hot milk is the usual starting point, then you adjust until it tastes like the one you remember. For cakes and buttercream, a splash gives you colour and coffee flavour without brewing a thing.

Camp is really a one-bottle brand, so people tend to build the basket around it: a box of proper British tea, a packet of digestives for dunking, a tin of golden syrup for the rest of the baking.
