About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

About McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

If there is a biscuit that has earned its place next to a cup of tea through sheer consistency rather than any particular effort to impress, it is McVitie's Rich Tea. Plain, crisp, lightly sweet, and almost suspiciously easy to eat in quantity without quite meaning to.

McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits come in a 200g pack, made in the United Kingdom to the same straightforward recipe British households have been working through for generations. There is nothing complicated here: a thin, round biscuit with a gentle sweetness and just enough structure to survive a brief dunk, though that last part is very much a matter of timing and confidence.

For British expats in Canada, Rich Tea sits in a particular category of biscuit that is less about occasion and more about habit. It is the packet that lived in the kitchen cupboard, appeared alongside a mid-morning brew, and disappeared without ceremony. The Great British Shop stocks the genuine UK version, imported from Britain, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from overseas or hope a visiting relative remembered to pack them.

The biscuits are suitable for vegetarians and dairy-free, which makes them a reasonable option for households with mixed dietary needs. The 200g pack contains around 36 biscuits, which sounds like plenty until you are halfway through a pot of tea and suddenly it is not.

More about McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

Rich Tea sits in a specific corner of the British biscuit world: not a chocolate biscuit, not a cream sandwich, not a special-occasion tin. It is a plain, everyday biscuit, the kind that has historically outnumbered everything else in the cupboard simply because it disappears so steadily. Within British grocery culture, Rich Tea is about as fundamental as biscuits get.

For British expats in Canada, finding McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits is often less about craving something fancy and more about restoring a small domestic rhythm. The search for British biscuits in Canada is a genuinely common one, and Rich Tea tends to sit near the top of that list, partly because it is so tied to the ordinary routine of a tea break rather than any particular occasion.

The 200g pack is a sensible size: enough to last a week of regular brews, light enough to post or tuck into a care parcel. Suitable for vegetarians and dairy-free, it stores well in a cool, dry place, and once opened an airtight container keeps it crisp. No freezer space required.

McVitie's produces a wide range of British biscuits, from Digestives to Hobnobs, and Rich Tea sits at the quieter, plainer end of that range. If you are building a proper British biscuit selection, the full McVitie's in Canada range and the broader British biscuits section are worth a look.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Kitchener or Toronto, there is no overseas parcel delay involved. It arrives as it should: intact, cupboard-ready, and entirely unremarkable in the best possible sense.
