The story of Galaxy Minstrels
Melts in your mouth, allegedly
You know how Minstrels go. Nobody eats just one, and nobody eats them one at a time either. The bag gets tipped, a small handful goes in, and the shell does its job right up until it does not. In 1980s British adverts they were 'The chocolates that melt in your mouth, not in your hand', and anyone who has held a few too long on a warm afternoon knows that promise came with conditions. These are Galaxy Minstrels, made by Mars, and they belong to the cinema queue and the long car journey.

An American in Slough
The story starts with a son who wanted his own patch. Forrest Mars Sr., son of American candy maker Frank C. Mars, moved to Britain and in 1932 started his own company, Mars Limited, in Slough, Berkshire. The factory he set up there is the birthplace of the Mars bar, which is a decent thing to have on your CV. It is still in Slough, and it still makes Galaxy alongside the Mars bar, Snickers and Maltesers. That is a fair chunk of the British sweet cupboard coming out of one town.
A very close second
Galaxy was first manufactured in the United Kingdom in 1960. In 2014 it was ranked the second-best-selling chocolate bar in the UK, behind only Cadbury Dairy Milk, which is exactly the sort of fact that starts an argument in an office kitchen. Over here you might know the family by another name: Galaxy goes by Dove in Canada and the United States. Same family, different badge, and the one with Galaxy on the front is the one you grew up with.
Still busy in Berkshire
Minstrels were brought under the Galaxy brand as part of Mars's rebranding, which is why the bag in your hand reads Galaxy Minstrels. They sit in a range that includes Ripple, Bubbles, caramel, Cookie Crumble, Fruit & Nut and Truffle. The Slough factory employs more than 1,850 people, and Mars is investing £190 million (2023 to 2028) to turn it into a 'next-generation manufacturing hub'. Somebody in Berkshire is clearly expecting you to finish the bag.
