About Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn

About Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn

Every British gran had a bag of Werther's in her handbag. Somebody finally had the sense to put that caramel on popcorn.

Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn is exactly that: crunchy popcorn in a caramel coat, the flavour you know from the gold wrappers, now by the handful.

Christmas film on, everyone on the sofa, bag goes round. It comes back lighter every time, and nobody saw who did it.

It is the UK pack, shipped from within Canada, so a proper British Christmas night in is sorted. Fair warning: it will not see Boxing Day.

Frequently asked questions about Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 140g bag. Enough to share on a film night, if you are feeling generous.

Q: Is it a good Christmas gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very. Anyone who grew up with Werther's will know the name before the paper is off, and it makes a cracking stocking filler.

Q: Is it the same as the Werther's sweets?

A: Same name, same caramel idea, different shape. This one is popcorn, so it goes in a bowl rather than a handbag.

More about Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn

In Britain, Werther's means caramel, full stop. The popcorn sits on the shelf near the big sharing bags of crisps, the sweet option for a night in front of the telly.

If you grew up with the gold wrappers, the name does all the work. People go looking for it because they want that exact caramel flavour, and a bag on the coffee table at Christmas in Canada feels like a bit of home has wandered in and sat down.

The 140g bag is about right for two people sharing, or one person with no witnesses. Fold the top over and it sits happily in the cupboard until the Christmas telly starts. Tip it into a bowl and it vanishes. Leave it in the bag and it vanishes slightly slower.

It drops into a stocking without complaint and sits nicely next to the selection boxes and the tin of chocolates. Plenty of people pair it with the classic Werther's sweets, which keeps the whole family happy, gran included.

The story of Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn

The advert you can still hear

You know the advert before you have finished reading the bag. An older man, a boy, a sweet handed across like a family secret. For plenty of people who grew up in Britain, Werther's Original meant a grandparent's coat pocket and a rustle of wrapper on a long car journey, handed over only once you had been quiet for ten miles. This bag carries that same name, from August Storck KG. Nobody has to earn it by sitting still, mind. That rule has gone.

A founder who changed his name

It starts in 1903 in Werther, Westphalia, Germany, where August Storck founded the company that still carries his name. Which is a twist, because he later changed the family name to Oberwelland. After the Second World War, a new, larger and more modern production facility was built in Halle, Westphalia. Today August Storck KG is headquartered in Berlin, and it is owned by Axel Oberwelland. The name on the door and the name on the family went separate ways, and both stuck around.

Echte first, Original later

The sweet arrived in 1969 under the German name Werthers Echte. The international name Werther's Original came along in the 1990s, for export markets. Then there was the telly. From the late 1980s, adverts in Germany and the UK showed an older man offering a Werther's to a boy. In the British version, the actor was Arnold Peters. Most of us remember those adverts better than the programmes either side of them, which says something about the programmes.

Good company, then the sofa

August Storck KG lists Werther's Original as one of its core brands, alongside Toffifee, merci and RIESEN. Not a bad crowd to be seen with. As for this bag, it belongs wherever a film is on and the sofa is full. It goes round politely the first time. The second time, elbows come out. And somebody will swear blind the last handful was always theirs. It was not, and everyone knows it.
