About Butterkist Sweet & Salted Popcorn

About Butterkist Sweet & Salted Popcorn

The film has not even started and the bag is already half gone. Butterkist Sweet & Salted Popcorn is the one that sat on the coffee table every Friday night back home, and somehow it never made it to the end credits.

Sweet first, then the salt catches up, and your hand is back in the bag before you have decided whether you like it. You do. Everybody does.

It is the Butterkist you grew up with, the bag from the corner shop on the way home, now sitting on the shelf at The Great British Shop in Halifax.

Frequently asked questions about Butterkist Sweet & Salted Popcorn

Q: Is this the UK version of Butterkist?

A: It is, the same bag you would pick up in a British corner shop. We ship it from within Canada, so it has not crossed an ocean to get to your door.

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 70g bag, which is one person's film. Two people can share it, in theory.

Q: Is it good to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very. Tuck it into a parcel with some British crisps and chocolate and you have sent a whole Friday night from back home.

More about Butterkist Sweet & Salted Popcorn

In Britain, popcorn and crisps live side by side in the snack aisle, and Butterkist is the name most people reach for. Sweet and salted is the peace treaty, for the household where half the sofa wants sweet and the other half wants salt.

People in Canada go looking for it because they remember that exact taste: the film night with the curtains drawn, the bag shoved into a school bag, the one handful you nicked from a sibling. Nothing else quite tastes like being twelve on a Friday.

This is a single bag, ready to eat straight from the pack. Enough for one person and one film, or two people if somebody is feeling generous. Keep it sealed in a cool, dry cupboard, though it rarely stays there long enough for that to matter.

Butterkist is best known for its toffee popcorn, and the sweet and salted bag is its easy-going cousin. It sits nicely in a basket with a bag of British crisps, a bar of chocolate and a bottle of squash for a proper night in.

The story of Butterkist Sweet & Salted Popcorn

The rustle that starts the film

The film has not properly started until somebody opens the Butterkist. You know the sound. The rustle that gets you glared at from the other end of the sofa, the hand that goes in for one and comes out with six, the last handful that is mostly crumbs and gets eaten anyway. Butterkist has been the popcorn in British cinemas and front rooms for generations, so spotting the bag on a shelf over here is a small, daft, very good feeling.

From Kentucky to the cinema queue

It started in 1914, when Fred Hoke and James Holcomb began selling popcorn machines in Kentucky, USA, under the Butter-Kist name, with help from inventor Dan Talbert. The machines arrived in the UK in 1938, and the brand grew the way you would hope, through sales to cinema audiences. After the Second World War, Craven Keiller built a factory in York to supply Butterkist popcorn directly to UK cinema chains. Popcorn, in other words, that grew up in the dark, watching films.

A few owners, then Pontefract

In 1998 Craven Keiller sold Butterkist to Cadbury Trebor Bassett, which in 2000 merged it into its Monkhill Confectionery subsidiary and moved production to Pontefract, West Yorkshire. In 2017 KP Snacks acquired the Butterkist popcorn business from Tangerine Confectionery, including its Pontefract manufacturing site and 140 staff. KP Snacks is a subsidiary of the Intersnack Group. A lot of names on the paperwork, then. Butterkist is still produced in Pontefract, which has held on to it through every change of letterhead.

Top of the pile

Butterkist grew into the UK's leading popcorn brand, and as of 2025 it is Britain's best-selling brand of popcorn. It marked its 100th anniversary in 2014. None of which matters much when you are on the sofa with the film paused, telling yourself you are only having a few. It is the bag from the corner shop, the bag on the coach trip, the bag that somehow empties itself during the adverts. You will finish it. Everyone does.
