About Butterkist Cinema Sweet Popcorn

About Butterkist Cinema Sweet Popcorn

Some smells go straight back to a Saturday matinee: the trailers rolling, the floor a bit sticky, the bag rustling louder than the film. That bag was Butterkist Cinema Sweet Popcorn.

Light, crunchy and sweet, it is the one you opened during the adverts and swore you would save for the film. You did not save it for the film.

This is the UK bag, the one from every British corner shop, and it ships from within Canada.

Film night, the sofa, someone else in charge of the remote. You pass it along. Eventually.

Frequently asked questions about Butterkist Cinema Sweet Popcorn

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 70g bag, which is a decent film's worth for one person. Sharing is possible, in theory.

Q: Do I need to cook it?

A: No. It is already popped and sweetened, so you open the bag and get on with the film.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. It is light, it travels well, and a few bags in a parcel will get a grin from anyone who grew up on Saturday matinees.

More about Butterkist Cinema Sweet Popcorn

In Britain, cinema popcorn tends to mean sweet, and Butterkist is the name on the bag most people picture. It turns up in lunchboxes, at the corner shop till and on the sofa when the film starts.

People in Canada go looking for it because they want that exact bag: the same crunch, the same sweetness, the same rustle that gets you shushed in the dark. Close enough is never quite the point.

The 70g bag is ready to eat straight away. No popping, no pan, no smoke alarm. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard, and if the bag somehow survives the first sitting, roll the top down and it will hold on until the next film. It is a good size for one person, or for two people who trust each other.

Most people take a few bags at once, because one never lasts the week. It sits nicely next to a bottle of British fizzy pop and a sharing bag of chocolate for a proper night in.

The story of Butterkist Cinema Sweet Popcorn

Half gone before the trailers

You know the rule. The bag is meant for the film, and it is half empty before the adverts finish. Butterkist is the popcorn that sat on your lap in the dark, rustling at exactly the wrong moment while someone two rows back tutted. That is no accident: the brand grew through sales to cinema audiences in Britain, so it knows its way around a darkened room. Open a bag at home and the lights seem to go down on their own.

Kentucky first, oddly enough

It started in 1914, when Fred Hoke and James Holcomb began selling popcorn machines in Kentucky, USA, under the Butter-Kist name. Those machines arrived in the UK in 1938, and the brand grew the way you would hope: through sales to cinema audiences. After the Second World War, Craven Keiller built a factory in York to supply Butterkist popcorn directly to UK cinema chains. So the bag on your lap at the pictures has a longer back story than most of the films.

A lot of owners, one bag

In 1998 Craven Keiller sold Butterkist to Cadbury Trebor Bassett, which in 2000 merged it into its Monkhill Confectionery subsidiary and moved production to Pontefract, West Yorkshire. In 2017 KP Snacks acquired the Butterkist popcorn business from Tangerine Confectionery, including the Pontefract manufacturing site and 140 staff. KP Snacks, a subsidiary of the Intersnack Group, still makes it in Pontefract. The brand marked its 100th anniversary in 2014, which is a long run for something mostly eaten with the lights off.

Top of the pile

As of 2025, Butterkist is Britain's best-selling brand of popcorn, which will surprise nobody who has stood in a supermarket aisle at home. It became the bag for the Friday night film, the long car journey, the match on telly with the curtains drawn. Somebody always says they will just have a handful. Then they hand you back an empty bag and look genuinely puzzled about it. Some habits travel well.
