About Thursday Cottage Deluxe Strawberry Jam with Champagne

About Thursday Cottage Deluxe Strawberry Jam with Champagne

Strawberry jam, but it has been to a wedding. Thursday Cottage Deluxe Strawberry Jam with Champagne is the jar that comes out when the scones are home-made and somebody has used the good plates.

At heart it is still strawberry jam, the thing you spread on toast without a second thought. The champagne bit just means nobody gets away with using the buttery knife. Probably.

This is the UK jar, and it ships from within Canada, so the cream tea can go ahead without anyone booking a flight first.

Cream first or jam first is your business. We just supply the jam.

Frequently asked questions about Thursday Cottage Deluxe Strawberry Jam with Champagne

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 210g jar, so smaller than your everyday breakfast jam. Plenty for a cream tea or two, and it will not outstay its welcome.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: Very much so. It is a small, smart jar that says you thought about it, and anyone who grew up with afternoon tea will know exactly what to do with it.

Q: What do people eat it with?

A: Scones and clotted cream, mostly, in whichever order starts the fewest arguments. It also does a fine job in the middle of a Victoria sponge, or on toast when nobody is watching.

More about Thursday Cottage Deluxe Strawberry Jam with Champagne

Jam sits right in the middle of a British afternoon: scones, a pot of tea, and the cream-or-jam argument that has outlasted several governments. A deluxe jar is the one bought for an occasion, or quietly hidden from house guests.

People look for this one by name because they remember a particular afternoon. A tea room on holiday, a gran's kitchen, a birthday with a Victoria sponge cut a bit too generously. Strawberry jam is easy to find. The one from that afternoon takes a little more hunting.

The 210g jar is on the small side, which suits something this fancy. It covers a good few rounds of scones without lurking at the back of the fridge for a year. Unopened, it sits happily in the cupboard; once it is open, do what the label tells you.

It earns its place next to a box of proper British tea and a batch of scones, or stirred through the middle of a sponge. Thursday Cottage is a name many people know from the preserves shelf back home, and this is the jar for when the ordinary one feels a bit underdressed.

The story of Thursday Cottage Deluxe Strawberry Jam with Champagne

Jam that dressed for the occasion

Strawberry jam is the reliable one. It turns up on toast, in the middle of a Victoria sponge, on a scone at a village fete, and nobody makes a fuss. This one has Champagne in the name, so it is allowed to make a small fuss. It comes from Thursday Cottage, a jam maker that has done things the slow way since 1963. It is the jar that comes out when somebody you like is coming round, not the one that lives in the back of the fridge.

A cottage near Spaxton

The business started in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. That explains the name, and saves everyone a lot of guessing about Thursdays. For many years it was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. These days Thursday Cottage is an independent part of the Tiptree group, with production based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade.

About a hundred jars at a time

Each boil still produces only about 100 jars. That is not a typo, and it is not a factory. It is the small-batch style Thursday Cottage is known for, and the whole point of a firm that specialises in luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade. You will not find it stacked by the till at a petrol station. You find it in the kind of shop where the owner knows your name and probably your dog's.

Good company, and a Royal Warrant

The parent company, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885 and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. It currently holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. Elsewhere in the Thursday Cottage range sits a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky, so somebody there clearly likes breakfast with a bit of swagger. Your Sunday toast has never had it so good.
