The story of Thursday Cottage Deluxe Fine Cut Marmalade with Whisky
Toast, with a bit of swagger
Every British house has one person with strong views on marmalade, and they are usually the one guarding the toast rack. Thick cut or fine cut. Butter first or not at all. This jar settles one argument and starts another, because it is fine cut and it has whisky in it. Breakfast that looks like it has made an effort, from Thursday Cottage, where the range is still handmade. Spread it thin if you like. Nobody is watching.

Named after the house, sensibly
Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. It sounds like the house it started in because it is the house it started in, which is about as British as a company name gets. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. Plenty of small makers quietly disappear when the people behind them step back. This one kept going, and kept its name.
A hundred jars at a time
Today Thursday Cottage is an independent part of the Tiptree group, with production at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade. Each boil still produces only about 100 jars. That is not a factory line, that is a kitchen with ambition. The parent company, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885, and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. Marmalade, it turns out, is taken very seriously in Essex.
Strictly for the independents
Thursday Cottage specialises in producing luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, so you find it in the sort of shop that knows your name, not the one with forty tills. The Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky sits alongside a Strawberry Jam with Champagne, so somebody there clearly enjoys their weekends. Wilkin and Sons Ltd currently holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. Your toast is in good company.
