About Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter

About Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter

Brandy butter has a cousin, and it has been quietly stealing the pudding course for years.

Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter is the British sweet butter you spoon onto hot Christmas pudding and warm mince pies. It melts into every corner while everyone insists they are only having a little.

It is the part of a British Christmas nobody thinks to pack and everybody misses once they are in Canada. The pudding comes out, someone asks where the butter is, and the room goes very quiet.

Not this year.

Frequently asked questions about Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is, the Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter you would find in Britain. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada.

Q: What do you actually put it on?

A: Hot Christmas pudding first, warm mince pies second. After that, it is between you and the spoon.

Q: Would it work as a gift?

A: Very well, especially tucked in with a Christmas pudding for someone who misses home. It is the detail that tells them you remembered how it was done.

More about Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter

On a British Christmas table it belongs to the brandy butter and rum butter family: the cold, sweet spoonful that goes on the pudding, with custard or cream fighting for space alongside it. Amaretto is the version for the people who fancy something a bit different from the usual bottle.

Plenty of families in Canada manage to track down a proper pudding. The butter is the bit that goes missing, and you only notice when the pudding is already on the table and somebody is holding an empty spoon.

This one is 110g, a sensible amount for one pudding and a round of mince pies, or for one person who is not sharing. Spoon it straight onto something hot and let it do the work. Whatever survives Christmas Day tends to turn up again on Boxing Day, on a mince pie eaten standing at the cupboard.

Thursday Cottage is a name British shoppers know from the preserves and Christmas pudding aisles. People usually buy this alongside a Christmas pudding and a box of mince pies, which is roughly the whole point of it.

The story of Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter

Brandy butter's cheeky cousin

Somebody always puts the brandy butter on the table and then guards it like the last roast potato. This one has other ideas. Thursday Cottage sells its Amaretto Butter as a twist on traditional brandy butter, and that is exactly the job it does: the same spoonful on the same hot Christmas pudding, with a bit more swagger. Your nan might raise an eyebrow. Then she will ask you to pass the jar. That is how a British Christmas goes, every single year.

Yes, it really was a cottage

Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. So the name is not a marketing department's daydream. It is an address. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. New owners, same name on the jar. Which is more than you can say for most things from 1963.

Moved in with jam royalty

Thursday Cottage is now an independent part of the Tiptree group. Its parent, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885, and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. Today it holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. Production is based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, where the range is still handmade, and each boil still produces only about 100 jars. Small batches, by hand, still.

Champagne in the jam, whisky in the marmalade

Thursday Cottage specialises in luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, the kind of jar you find in a good deli or a farm shop on the drive home. The range today includes a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky and a Strawberry Jam with Champagne, so the Amaretto Butter is keeping fairly spirited company. Its place is on the table on Christmas Day, next to the pudding, with a spoon already in it.
