About Tango Shocker Bar Blue Raspberry

About Tango Shocker Bar Blue Raspberry

Nobody has ever actually met a blue raspberry. That has never stopped anyone. The Tango Shocker Bar Blue Raspberry is the little one from the corner shop counter, bought with whatever coins were rattling about in your pocket after school.

Tango never did subtle, and the name gives the game away. You are not meant to eat this calmly.

It is a small bar, so you will buy three and say the other two are for later. They are not for later.

This is the UK one, and it ships from within Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Tango Shocker Bar Blue Raspberry

Q: How big is it?

A: It is a single 11g bar, the pocket-money size you remember from the corner shop. Small enough that one is never quite enough, which is rather the point.

Q: Is this the same Tango as the fizzy drink?

A: Same name, same attitude, in bar form. If you remember the adverts, you already know the tone.

Q: Is it good to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very. It is light, it fits in an envelope with a card, and it gets a bigger reaction than its size has any right to.

More about Tango Shocker Bar Blue Raspberry

In Britain this sits firmly in pocket-money territory: the rack by the till, next to the penny sweets and the things your mum said would rot your teeth. Nobody plans to buy one. It just ends up in your hand while you wait for your change.

People in Canada go looking for it because of a very specific memory, usually involving a blue tongue shown off to a friend and a name you cannot quite find over here. Typing it into a search bar at midnight is a perfectly normal thing to do.

It is a single 11g bar, wrapped and ready to go, so it lives happily in the cupboard, a desk drawer or the glovebox. It slips into lunchboxes and party bags, and it is just the right size to post in a card to someone who will know exactly what it means.

It carries the same loud, cheeky Tango name as the fizzy drink. Most people pick it up alongside a handful of other British sweets, because one small bar on its own never quite feels like enough of a trip home.

The story of Tango Shocker Bar Blue Raspberry

Not orange, still Tango

If you grew up in Britain, the word Tango arrives with baggage, most of it orange and some of it involving a slap. This one is blue raspberry, which is a bit like the Orange Man turning up in a different coat. Same name, same cheek, just something you unwrap instead of pour. You spot it, you read the wrapper, and for half a second you check over your shoulder in case somebody painted orange is about to come running.

Two grocers in Porth

The story starts in South Wales, not in a marketing office. Two grocers, William Thomas and William Evans, founded Corona in response to the growing temperance movement. Somebody had to give the teetotallers something worth drinking. The first factory was in Porth, in the Rhondda, and Corona grew to 87 depots and factories across Britain. In April 1958 the Porth company launched Tango, an orangeade set apart from regular Corona by the addition of real fruit and real sugar.

Owners came, Corona went

Tango did not stay with its makers for long. The Beecham Group bought Corona, and Tango with it, in September 1958. In 1986 Beecham sold Tango, Corona and other soft drink brands to Britvic. Corona itself stopped trading as a brand in the late 1990s, so Tango outlasted the name it was born under. Today it is owned and made by Britvic, part of Carlsberg Britvic, and the range runs from real-fruit flavours such as orange, apple, cherry and mango to non-drink products, bonbon sweets among them.

You know when you have been

Then there was the advert. Created by the agency HHCL, filmed in 1991 and aired in 1992, it showed an orange-painted figure slapping a man after he drank Tango, and it handed the country a catchphrase: 'You know when you've been Tango'd'. It was the first in a long-running campaign. It was also withdrawn, after reports that children were copying the slap and injuring each other in school playgrounds. If you were in a playground at the time, you need no further explanation. Possibly an ice pack.
