The story of Thursday Cottage Amaretto Butter
Brandy butter's cheeky cousin
Somebody always puts the brandy butter on the table and then guards it like the last roast potato. This one has other ideas. Thursday Cottage sells its Amaretto Butter as a twist on traditional brandy butter, and that is exactly the job it does: the same spoonful on the same hot Christmas pudding, with a bit more swagger. Your nan might raise an eyebrow. Then she will ask you to pass the jar. That is how a British Christmas goes, every single year.

Yes, it really was a cottage
Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. So the name is not a marketing department's daydream. It is an address. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. New owners, same name on the jar. Which is more than you can say for most things from 1963.
Moved in with jam royalty
Thursday Cottage is now an independent part of the Tiptree group. Its parent, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885, and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. Today it holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. Production is based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, where the range is still handmade, and each boil still produces only about 100 jars. Small batches, by hand, still.
Champagne in the jam, whisky in the marmalade
Thursday Cottage specialises in luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, the kind of jar you find in a good deli or a farm shop on the drive home. The range today includes a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky and a Strawberry Jam with Champagne, so the Amaretto Butter is keeping fairly spirited company. Its place is on the table on Christmas Day, next to the pudding, with a spoon already in it.
