About Toblerone Milk Chocolate Bar

About Toblerone Milk Chocolate Bar

Nobody buys a big Toblerone for themselves. That is the story, anyway, and everyone sticks to it.

The Toblerone Milk Chocolate Bar is the long one. It is the one from the airport shop that comes home in a suitcase and lasts about a day. Triangles all the way along, in a box that will not lie flat in any bag ever made.

The trick is the snap. You do not break a piece off, you lever it, and it either goes cleanly or takes your thumb with it.

This one comes over from the UK and ships from within Canada, so nobody has to fly anywhere for it.

Frequently asked questions about Toblerone Milk Chocolate Bar

Q: How big is this one?

A: It is the 340g bar, the long one you remember from the airport shop. Long enough to go round a room, if you are feeling generous.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: It is the gift that needs no explaining. Pop it in a parcel for someone who misses home and they will know what it is before the paper is off.

Q: How do you break off a piece without a fight?

A: Bend the triangle back towards the bar rather than pulling it away. It snaps clean, mostly.

More about Toblerone Milk Chocolate Bar

Toblerone is Swiss by birth, but in Britain it has always lived alongside the big-name chocolate bars: on the newsagent shelf, in the supermarket aisle, at the motorway services and in the shop by the departure gate.

If you grew up in the UK, that long triangular box is tied up with trips. It is the one an aunt brought back, or the one grabbed at the last minute because somebody forgot a present. People go looking for it because they want that exact bar, in that exact box, and nothing else will scratch the itch.

This is the big bar, long enough to pass along a whole sofa of people. It keeps happily in a cool cupboard out of the sun, and the box closes back up, in theory. Most people snap it into triangles and hand them round. A few chop it up for baking, and nobody judges them for it.

It sits nicely with the rest of the British chocolate on our shelves, and plenty of people tuck one into a parcel with a few bars and a box of tea for someone who misses home.

The story of Toblerone Milk Chocolate Bar

Nobody eats it neatly

There is no polite way to eat a Toblerone. You snap a triangle off and hurt your thumb, or you bite in from the side and hurt your pride. Everyone has tried both. Nobody has won. It is a row of little peaks in a box, and the struggle is part of the deal. Theodor Tobler devised that shape, so if your thumb has a complaint, he is the man to write to.

A shop in Bern first

Jean Tobler owned his own confectionery shop in Bern, Switzerland, from 1868, producing chocolate confectionery from products supplied by other manufacturers. People wanted more. Demand did what demand does, and in 1899 a factory followed: the Fabrique de Chocolat Berne, Tobler & Cie, founded in Bern by Emil Baumann and Theodor Tobler. That is quite a step up from a shop counter. We run one, so we are allowed to say so.

Two cousins and a triangle

Theodor Tobler and his cousin Emil Baumann are the pair behind Toblerone. In 1908 Baumann created the recipe, and Tobler devised the triangular shape and the packaging. Neat division of labour. The name joins Tobler's surname to the Italian word torrone, which is tidier than most families manage when naming anything. The shape is commonly believed to have been inspired by the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. Toblerone is considered the world's first patented milk chocolate bar, which is a fine thing to have on the family record.

New names on the letterhead

The company was independent from 1899 until 1970, then merged with Suchard, then with Jacobs as Jacobs Suchard, before Kraft Foods, renamed Mondelez International, acquired it in 2012. Toblerone has been produced in Switzerland since 1908 and is exported from Bern to 120 countries and to 500 airports. That is a lot of airports. Mondelez has been moving some manufacturing to Slovakia, so some bars lose the 'Swiss' label and the Matterhorn outline on the packaging. The triangles carry on regardless. So do the sore thumbs.
