About Terry's Chocolate Orange Large Bar

About Terry's Chocolate Orange Large Bar

Nobody has ever eaten one piece of Terry's Chocolate Orange and stopped there. Nobody.

The Terry's Chocolate Orange Large Bar takes the flavour you know from the famous orange and puts it in a bar. A big one. Same chocolate, same orange, and nothing to whack on the edge of the table first.

If you grew up with it, you know the smell the second the wrapper opens. It goes straight back to someone's living room, a film on, the bar going round with everyone insisting they will only have a bit.

It is a large bar. It will not feel large for long.

Frequently asked questions about Terry's Chocolate Orange Large Bar

Q: Is this the UK Terry's Chocolate Orange?

A: Yes, it is the British bar, the one you remember, and it ships from within Canada, so it has not got far left to travel.

Q: How big is the large bar?

A: It is 330g, which is a proper sharing bar. Whether any sharing actually happens is between you and your conscience.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Few things say 'I remembered' quite like the exact chocolate orange they grew up with, and a flat bar travels better than a ball.

More about Terry's Chocolate Orange Large Bar

In Britain, chocolate orange is practically its own category, and Terry's is the name everybody means when they say it. Other people make orange chocolate. Only one gets called by its first name in the sweet aisle.

Plenty of people in Canada go looking for it because the flavour is tied to somewhere specific: a gran's sideboard, a long car journey, a lunchbox that was the envy of the class. Finding the actual Terry's, not a guess at it, is the whole point.

The bar format makes life easier than the orange. It breaks into pieces, it shares round a room without anyone needing to tap anything, and it keeps happily in a cool, dry cupboard out of the sun. A proper 330g bar means there is, in theory, enough for everyone. In practice, hide it.

It tends to end up in a basket with other British chocolate and a box of proper tea, which is a sensible evening sorted. Pair it with a brew and accept that the bar is not coming back to the cupboard.

The story of Terry's Chocolate Orange Large Bar

Tap it, then guard it

You know the ritual. One sharp tap on the table, peel back the foil, and it falls open into segments. Then everyone in the room suddenly takes a keen interest in oranges. Terry's began making the Chocolate Orange in 1932, and the segments and that famous tapability made it an instant success. The tap was the selling point then and it is the selling point now. Nobody has ever opened one quietly, and nobody ever will.

Before the orange, an apple

One for the pub quiz. The very first Terry's product was a Chocolate Apple, and the brand was originally Terry's Chocolate Apple, before the orange version existed. The apple had its moment. The orange got the slogans: first 'Tap it and unwrap it', then the rather less polite 'Don't tap it...whack it!' Generations of kitchen tables have taken that advice very much to heart.

A sweet shop near Bootham Bar

Terry's of York goes back to 1767 and a small shop near Bootham Bar, selling boiled sweets and candied fruit, with larger premises in St Helen's Square from 1818. Joseph Terry, born in Pocklington, trained as an apothecary, set up as a chemist in Walmgate and later joined the Berry family confectionery business. Terry's stood alongside Rowntree's and Cravens in York's famous confectionery triumvirate. In 1963 the company passed from the Terry family to Forte Group, then to Colgate-Palmolive in 1977, United Biscuits in 1982 and Kraft Foods Inc in 1993.

Passed round like a segment

Kraft closed Terry's Chocolate Works in York in 2005 and moved production to its factories in Europe. The old works is luxury apartments now, which is one way to live in a chocolate factory. The business returned to the UK in 2019 as Terry's Chocolate Co, based in London. Today Terry's is one of the brands owned by Carambar & Co, a French confectionery company founded in 2016, and is made in Strasbourg. EU regulators authorised Ferrero's planned acquisition of the parent group CPK in October 2025, so another change of hands looks likely. The tap stays the same.
