About Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding Boxed

About Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding Boxed

Somebody turns the lights off, somebody strikes the match, and everybody pretends they still have room. That is the bit of Christmas dinner people remember.

The Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding is a proper one-pound pudding in its box: dark, round, heavy in the hand, and absolutely not optional once the turkey has gone.

If you grew up with one arriving at the table every 25 December, a Christmas in Canada without it feels like the crackers were never pulled. Here it is.

Custard, cream or brandy butter? That argument is yours to have. It always is.

Frequently asked questions about Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding Boxed

Q: Is this the UK Christmas pudding?

A: It is. This is the British Thursday Cottage pudding, the UK product, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is it?

A: A proper one-pound pudding, 454g. Enough for the table to share, with the usual fight over the last spoonful.

Q: Is it a good Christmas gift for someone who misses home?

A: About as good as it gets. It comes boxed, so it looks the part, and it is the one thing a British expat will not buy for themselves until it is nearly too late.

More about Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding Boxed

The Christmas pudding is the full stop at the end of a British Christmas dinner. It turns up after the sprouts have been dealt with and the paper hats have slipped, gets its moment in the dark with a flame on top, and then gets finished, somehow, by people who swore they were done.

Nobody plans to go looking for a Christmas pudding in October. Then someone at work mentions custard, a parent on a video call asks if you have sorted the pudding yet, and suddenly a British Christmas food you have not thought about all year is the only thing on your mind.

This one comes boxed, a one-pound pudding that sits quietly in the cupboard until it is needed. The heating instructions are on the box. The brandy and the match are your department, and so is deciding who is brave enough to carry it in.

A pudding on its own looks a bit lonely. Most people who take one home also take a tin of custard and a box of mince pies, and a few go the whole way with crackers. That is how the Boxing Day cupboard gets built.

The story of Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding Boxed

The pudding that finishes the day

Everyone at the table swears they could not eat another thing. Then the pudding comes out, and suddenly there is room. That is a British Christmas in one move, and it is the bit people miss most when home is a long way off. Thursday Cottage make theirs by hand, which is exactly how you want the last course of Christmas dinner to turn up. Nobody remembers the sprouts. Everybody remembers who had seconds of pudding and pretended they had not.

It started in an actual cottage

Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. Named after the place it started, which is refreshingly honest. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. These days it is an independent part of the Tiptree group, with production based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade. Each boil still produces only about 100 jars. Small batches, on purpose.

Rather good company in Tiptree

The parent firm, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885 and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. Today it holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. So the people behind your pudding have had a warrant for their marmalade since 1911. Not bad going for a jam kitchen.

Then there is the rest of the cupboard

Thursday Cottage mostly makes handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, and the range has a sense of humour: a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky, a Strawberry Jam with Champagne. There is also an Amaretto Butter, sold as a twist on traditional brandy butter, the sort of thing that sits next to the pudding on Christmas Day and is mysteriously gone by Boxing Day. Nobody ate it. Obviously.
