About Taylors Duck & Roast Potato Ridge Cut Crisps

About Taylors Duck & Roast Potato Ridge Cut Crisps

Roast dinner, in a crisp. Somebody in Britain had to try it, and Taylors Duck & Roast Potato Ridge Cut Crisps are what happened when they did.

Ridged, sturdy and tasting of a good Sunday plate, this is the kind of flavour that makes perfect sense back home and earns a raised eyebrow anywhere else. Then the eyebrow eats half the bag.

These are the UK crisps, shipped from within Canada, so the craving only has to travel from Halifax.

Open them in front of company at your own risk.

Frequently asked questions about Taylors Duck & Roast Potato Ridge Cut Crisps

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 150g sharing bag. Whether it actually gets shared is between you and your conscience.

Q: What does ridge cut mean?

A: The crisps have ridges running across them, which makes them thicker and crunchier than a flat crisp. They also scoop a dip without breaking off in it.

Q: Would these make a good gift for someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. A bag of something they cannot find in the local shop says more than a card ever will, and it is a lot more fun to open.

More about Taylors Duck & Roast Potato Ridge Cut Crisps

Britain treats crisp flavours as a competitive sport. Prawn cocktail and roast chicken are the old hands. Duck and roast potato sits at the bolder end of the aisle, the bag you buy when you fancy something a bit more interesting than ready salted.

People in Canada go looking for these because they remember them from somewhere specific: a pub table, a train north, a bag split open on the walk home. Typing the name into a search bar is the closest thing to getting back there.

This is a 150g sharing bag, which is a generous description of what happens to it. The ridge cut stands up to a dip without snapping, and holds its crunch better than a flat crisp. Keep it in a cool cupboard, and once it is open, roll it down and clip it, if there is anything left to clip.

They tend to go in the basket alongside other British crisps, a jar of pickled onions for the brave, and something cold to drink. A bowl of these next to a pint is about as close to a British pub as a living room gets.

The story of Taylors Duck & Roast Potato Ridge Cut Crisps

Crisps from potato people

Some families pass down a recipe. The Taylors pass down a potato farm, and have done since 1927. That is the story behind the bag in front of you. You open it meaning to have a handful with your sandwich. A few minutes later it is folded flat, you are tipping the corners into your hand for the last bits, and you are telling yourself that was the plan all along. It was not. It never is.

Four generations of potatoes

The Taylor family has farmed the land around Errol in Perthshire for around 100 years, four generations of it. James Taylor's great-grandfather started a potato farming business in 1927. In the 1980s, chairman George Taylor moved into washing and packing potatoes with the Taypack business. Then in 2009 he did the obvious thing with a farm full of potatoes and started making crisps. It took a while to get there, but nobody can say they rushed it.

The ice cream years

The crisps started life as Mackie's at Taypack, a joint venture launched in 2009 with Mackie's of Scotland, the Aberdeenshire ice cream and chocolate people. If you remember a bag with Mackie's on the front, that is where it came from. The Taylors took their stake to 75% in 2013, bought out the rest in 2022, and the whole lot was rebranded Taylors Snacks. New name on the bag, and it happens to be the family's own.

Two million bags a month

From The Old Brickworks in Errol, near the family farm, they now turn out more than two million bags of snacks every month. Straight cut, ridge cut, lentil waves, popcorn, and a limited-edition Haggis & Cracked Black Pepper that is exactly as Scottish as it sounds. They make an "extreme" range of crisps for Marks & Spencer too, and in 2024 they landed in every Aldi across the UK. Not bad going for a potato farm.
