About Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers

About Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers

Somebody took Maltesers, made them into reindeer and gave them a gingerbread flavour. Nobody asked, and everybody is glad they did.

Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers are the little ones from the UK Christmas aisle: a small bag of mini reindeer that empties faster than the Radio Times gets circled on Christmas Eve.

They go in the stocking. They go in the coat pocket for the Boxing Day walk. A few go missing before the stocking is even hung, and nobody saw a thing.

If you grew up with a British Christmas, you know the shape. Now you can get it in Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is, the same Maltesers reindeer you would find in a British supermarket at Christmas. We bring them over and ship them from within Canada.

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 59g bag of mini reindeer. Stocking-sized, or about one film's worth if you are honest with yourself.

Q: Do they make a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Pop a bag in with a card and watch someone in Canada remember exactly where they used to find these on Christmas morning.

More about Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers

In Britain, Maltesers are the chocolate that gets passed round the sofa without anyone deciding to open them. The reindeer are their Christmas outfit, turning up in December next to the selection boxes and the big tins.

People in Canada go looking for these because a British Christmas is made of small things. The film you watch every year, the paper hat, the stocking with the same sweets you had at eight. Miss one and the morning feels a bit off.

This is a 59g bag of mini reindeer, small enough to tuck into a stocking or a card envelope (a thick one). Keep the bag somewhere cool and dry, away from the radiator and, ideally, away from whoever in your house eats the decorations off the tree.

Most people buy them alongside a proper selection box and a tin for after dinner, so the stocking, the tree and the sofa are all covered. A bag for the advent drawer never goes amiss either.

The story of Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers

Never them, apparently

Somebody always finds the last one in the bottom of the stocking. It is never them. A bag of Maltesers at Christmas is one of those small British habits nobody plans and everybody keeps. This one comes from Mars, the same people behind the Teasers you dig for in the Celebrations box, and the Maltesers you hunt for in a packet of Revels, shaking it and hoping. If you grew up with them, you already know. A small taste of home at Christmas, when home is a long way off.

Slough, of all places

Forrest Mars Sr. became estranged from his father, moved to Europe and founded his own Mars company in Slough, England. Not Paris. Not Vienna. Slough. In 1936 he created Maltesers, and they were first sold in 1937. Mars still calls Slough 'the birthplace of Mars chocolate in the UK', and it has invested £190 million in the factory there since 2023. It still makes chocolate for the Mars, Galaxy, Snickers and Maltesers brands. Not bad for a family falling-out.

Energy balls, if you please

The original pitch was 'energy balls', aimed at slimming women. Nobody's nan has ever called them that. These days the slogan is 'The lighter way to enjoy chocolate', which is a polite way of saying the bag empties before you notice. Maltesers turn up all over the world in bags, boxes, tubes and plastic buckets. In 2021 Mars Wrigley UK even worked with Google Cloud on what was billed as the world's first Maltesers cake developed by artificial intelligence. Somewhere, a computer has opinions about chocolate.

The Boxing Day cupboard

Every British Christmas has a cupboard that fills up all through December and empties suspiciously fast once dinner on the 25th is done. The selection boxes go first. The tins are raided by Boxing Day. A little bag of Maltesers is the one somebody swears they never touched, right up until the empty packet turns up behind a sofa cushion. For a British Christmas in Canada, that small crime scene feels exactly like home.
