About Cadbury Caramilk Bar

About Cadbury Caramilk Bar

Same name, completely different bar. Pick up the Cadbury Caramilk you know from a Canadian corner shop and you get caramel in little chocolate cups. Pick up this one and you get something else entirely.

The Cadbury Caramilk Bar from the UK is golden, caramelised chocolate, smooth all the way through. It tastes like toffee that quietly decided to become chocolate. Anyone who tried it on a trip home usually comes back talking about it.

This is the UK bar, and it ships from within Canada, so nobody has to sacrifice suitcase space for it.

It snaps into neat squares. The squares do not hang about.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Caramilk Bar

Q: Is this the same Caramilk I can buy in Canada?

A: No, and that is exactly why people come looking for it. The Canadian Caramilk has runny caramel in chocolate cups; this British bar is solid golden caramelised chocolate, the whole way through.

Q: How big is the bar?

A: It is an 80g block that breaks into squares. Enough to share, if you are feeling generous.

Q: Is it a good thing to send as a gift?

A: Very much so, especially to anyone who has only ever known the Canadian Caramilk. Watching them work out it is a different bar is half the fun.

Q: Do you carry other Cadbury chocolate?

A: We do. Have a browse through the Cadbury range in the shop, because one gold bar on its own can look a bit lonely.

More about Cadbury Caramilk Bar

In Britain, Caramilk sits in the Dairy Milk family, the gold wrapper among the purple ones. It is a relative newcomer next to the old Cadbury favourites, and it went from curiosity to the one people actually reach for remarkably quickly.

Here, the trouble is the name. Type Caramilk into anything in Canada and you get the caramel-filled bar people grew up with, which is a fine thing but not this. So the searches get specific: UK Caramilk, British Caramilk, the gold one. You have found the gold one.

It comes as an 80g block that breaks into squares, which makes it easy to share and easier still to pretend you meant to share. Keep it in a cool cupboard out of the sun and it behaves itself. Some people chop it into brownies or cookies. Most never get that far.

Caramilk rarely travels alone. It tends to land in the basket next to a Dairy Milk or two, and it goes very well with a strong mug of tea and nobody asking for a piece.

The story of Cadbury Caramilk Bar

The two-square plan

Two squares, then back in the cupboard. That was the plan, and you know how it went. A Caramilk in a British house has a short life: somebody opens it just to try it, somebody else finds it, and by teatime there is an empty wrapper and a room full of innocent faces. The name above it is Cadbury, which for plenty of us was the answer to "anything from the shop?" long before we could see over the counter.

A Quaker with a grocer's shop

It started in 1824 at 93 Bull Street in Birmingham, where John Cadbury opened a grocer's shop selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate he prepared himself. He was a Quaker, and he promoted drinking chocolate partly as a respectable alternative to alcohol. A cup of cocoa instead of a pint. Brave. From 1831 the business moved into factory production of cocoa and drinking chocolate on Bridge Street, and in 1861 his sons, Richard and George, took over.

A village with no pubs

The brothers adopted a Dutch cocoa-pressing method and launched the purer 'Cocoa Essence' in 1866. In 1879 they opened a new, purpose-built factory at Bournville, south-west of Birmingham, and George developed it into a model village for the firm's workers, famous for having no public houses. A whole village and not a pub in it. Cadbury Dairy Milk was launched in 1905 and had become the company's best-selling product by 1914, and the 'glass and a half of full-cream milk' slogan followed in 1928.

Still Birmingham, after all that

There were mergers along the way: J. S. Fry & Sons in 1919, then Schweppes in 1969 to form Cadbury Schweppes. Kraft Foods acquired Cadbury in 2010, and it is now part of Mondelez International, created when Kraft split in 2012. Plenty of boardrooms, plenty of new letterheads. And yet Cadbury chocolate is still made in Britain today at the historic Bournville factory in Birmingham. Not bad for a business that started with one grocer's shop on Bull Street.
