About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Wispa

About Cadbury Wispa

There are chocolate bars, and then there are chocolate bars people have actually written letters about. The Cadbury Wispa sits firmly in the second category, which tells you something useful about what a 36g bar of aerated milk chocolate can apparently mean to people.

The Wispa is a Cadbury milk chocolate bar with a bubbly, aerated centre that gives it a noticeably lighter, softer texture than a solid bar. It is the kind of thing that disappears faster than expected and leaves you briefly confused about where it went. The 36g bar is the classic single-serve format, imported from the United Kingdom.

For British expats in Canada, the Wispa tends to sit alongside a fairly short list of things that feel genuinely irreplaceable. The Great British Shop carries it as the authentic UK version, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from home or hope a visiting relative has remembered to pack one in their carry-on.

Cadbury Wispa has been around since 1981, vanished for a while, and was brought back largely because enough people made their feelings known. It is now a fixture of the Cadbury range, and the 36g bar is exactly the format most people picture when they think of one.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Wispa

Q: What is the texture of a Cadbury Wispa bar like?

A: A Wispa is Cadbury milk chocolate with a densely aerated centre, meaning the inside is full of tiny bubbles rather than solid chocolate. The result is smooth and velvety in a way that feels noticeably lighter than a standard bar, even though it is still very much a proper chocolate bar. It is one of those textures that is oddly difficult to replicate, which is probably why people campaigned loudly enough to bring it back when it disappeared.

Q: Does Cadbury Wispa contain milk or nuts?

A: Yes, Cadbury Wispa contains milk, with milk solids at a minimum of 14 percent and whey powder also listed in the ingredients. It does not list nuts as a direct ingredient, but the product may contain almonds, hazelnuts, and other tree nuts, so anyone with a nut allergy should be aware of that. It is not suitable for anyone avoiding dairy.

Q: Is the Cadbury Wispa sold in Canada the genuine UK version?

A: Yes, the Cadbury Wispa available here is the 36g bar imported from the United Kingdom, so it is the same bar sold in British shops rather than a reformulated version. For British expats in Canada, that matters more than it might sound: the Wispa has a specific history, a specific texture, and a specific place in the memory of anyone who grew up buying one from a newsagent. Getting the UK version rather than a loose substitute is usually the whole point.
