About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut Bar

About Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut Bar

Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut is the sort of bar that has been sitting on British newsagent shelves long enough that most people stopped noticing it was there, right up until they moved to Canada and started noticing very much indeed.

The 120g Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut bar is exactly what it sounds like: classic Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate with whole hazelnuts scattered through it. Not chopped, not crushed into a paste, but whole hazelnuts, which means every row has a slightly different crunch to it. It is a straightforward idea, and it has held up well.

For British expats in Canada, this is one of those bars that tends to appear on a wish list fairly early. The Great British Shop stocks it as the genuine UK version, imported from the United Kingdom, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from home or hope someone remembers to pack it.

The bar comes in a 120g format, which is the full-sized version worth keeping in the cupboard rather than rationing. If Dairy Milk Wholenut is your bar of choice, it is worth knowing it sits alongside a fairly long run of other Cadbury lines available in Canada for when one bar leads, as it often does, to a slightly longer browse.

More about Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut Bar

Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut sits within the long-running Dairy Milk range as one of its more textural variations. Where most Dairy Milk bars are smooth throughout, the Wholenut version introduces whole hazelnuts into the milk chocolate, making it a distinct sub-category within British chocolate bars rather than simply a flavour variant. It has been a fixture in British confectionery for decades and is well understood by anyone who grew up buying chocolate in the UK.

In Canada, searches for Cadbury Wholenut, Cadbury Dairy Milk Wholenut, and British chocolate bars tend to come from people who know exactly what they are looking for. It is not a product most Canadian shops carry, which makes it the kind of thing that ends up on a list the moment someone realises they cannot simply pick it up locally.

The bar is 120g, which is a solid size for sharing or for keeping to yourself without any particular guilt. Storage is straightforward: a dry place away from heat, which means a kitchen cupboard works well for most of the year in most of Canada.

The Wholenut bar is part of a wider family worth exploring. Cadbury in Canada covers the broader range, and the full British chocolate section includes other bars that tend to travel the same wish lists.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Brampton, Burlington, Halifax, or Charlottetown, there is no overseas parcel to track and no customs conversation to have. It arrives as groceries should.
