About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Highland Shortbread Fingers

About Highland Shortbread Fingers

Shortbread in Canada is easy enough to find, but Highland Shortbread Fingers from the UK are a specific thing, and people who grew up with them tend to be quietly insistent about the difference.

These are classic Scottish shortbread fingers, baked to the traditional recipe that Highland has been using for decades. The 230g pack contains the familiar thick, crumbly fingers with that slightly sandy texture and a clean, buttery finish that does not try to be anything other than what it is. No icing, no filling, no embellishment. Just shortbread, done properly.

For British expats, a tin or packet of Highland shortbread is the sort of thing that turns up at Christmas, at a grandmother's house, or on a plate next to a cup of tea that nobody asked for but everyone appreciated. The Great British Shop carries the imported UK version, which means you are not hunting through a vague international aisle or waiting on a parcel from home.

Shortbread is one of those things where the recipe is almost comically simple and yet somehow wildly variable in result. Highland's version sits firmly in the category of ones that actually taste right, which is why it has been a staple of British biscuit tins for as long as most people can remember.

Frequently asked questions about Highland Shortbread Fingers

Q: What are Highland Shortbread Fingers like to eat?

A: Highland Shortbread Fingers are the kind of biscuit that does not try to be anything other than what they are: a proper Scottish shortbread with a crumbly, buttery texture and a straightforward, familiar richness. They are not delicate or fussy. They hold together well enough for a cup of tea and taste exactly as you would expect a shortbread finger made in Scotland to taste.

Q: Do Highland Shortbread Fingers contain gluten or dairy?

A: Yes, Highland Shortbread Fingers contain both wheat (gluten) and milk, so they are not suitable for people avoiding either allergen. This is fairly standard for a traditional butter shortbread, where wheat flour and dairy are central to the recipe rather than incidental. Anyone with a gluten or dairy intolerance should bear that in mind before opening the packet.

Q: Is this the Scottish-made version of Highland Shortbread Fingers?

A: Yes, these are made in Scotland and imported from the United Kingdom, which matters to a fair number of people who grew up with them. Shortbread is one of those things where provenance is part of the point, and for British expats in Canada or anyone buying them as a gift, knowing they are the genuine Scottish article rather than a local approximation is usually the whole reason for seeking them out.

More about Highland Shortbread Fingers

Highland Shortbread Fingers sit firmly in the Scottish shortbread tradition, which is a distinct category within British biscuits: butter-heavy, slightly sandy in texture, shaped into fingers rather than rounds, and with no added flavourings to distract from the base recipe. In British grocery terms, shortbread fingers are a pantry staple rather than an occasional novelty, the kind of thing kept in a cupboard for whenever a cup of tea appears.

For Canadians with British roots, or anyone who spent time in Scotland or the UK, Highland Shortbread Fingers are a specific memory rather than a generic category. The format, the texture and the flavour are tied to a particular experience, which makes them genuinely hard to replicate from local alternatives, however good those might be on their own terms.

The 230g pack is a practical size: not so large it goes stale before you finish it, and compact enough to tuck into a gift box or a care parcel without fuss. No refrigeration needed; a cool, dry cupboard is all it asks for.

Highland produces a range of Scottish biscuit lines, and the shortbread fingers sit comfortably alongside other traditional formats in their range. If you are building a broader British biscuit selection, the British biscuits category and the Highland in Canada collection are both worth a look.

The Great British Shop ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Victoria, Calgary, Montreal or Moncton, these arrive without the delays and uncertainty of an overseas parcel. Scottish shortbread, from Scotland, without the transatlantic gamble.
