About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Caramel Spread

Q: What does Cadbury Caramel Spread taste like?

A: Cadbury Caramel Spread combines milk chocolate and caramel notes in a jar, with honeycomb flavouring adding a faint depth underneath. It is recognisably Cadbury in character, sweet and rich, built from milk chocolate crumb, cocoa, and caramel powder rather than anything too complicated. It spreads like a chocolate spread but the caramel element gives it a slightly different direction from a straight cocoa spread.

Q: Is Cadbury Caramel Spread suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Cadbury Caramel Spread is suitable for vegetarians. It does contain milk as a confirmed allergen, through ingredients including whey powder, milk chocolate crumb, and full cream milk powder, so it is not suitable for vegans or anyone avoiding dairy. The product may also contain nuts and soya, which is worth noting for anyone with those sensitivities.

Q: Is Cadbury Caramel Spread a genuine UK product?

A: Cadbury Caramel Spread is a United Kingdom product, licensed by Mondelez International and produced under that arrangement in the UK. For British expats in Canada who grew up with Cadbury on the shelf, the appeal is the familiar Cadbury character rather than a generic caramel spread. It is the sort of jar people add to a British grocery order because the name alone is enough to justify it.

More about Cadbury Caramel Spread

Cadbury Caramel Spread sits in a corner of the British grocery world that does not have a direct Canadian equivalent: the chocolate-and-caramel spread category, where a jar does the work of both a biscuit topping and a toast companion. It belongs to the same licensed Cadbury range that has put the brand's flavour profile into everything from drinking chocolate to dessert ingredients, and it is made in the United Kingdom under licence from MondelΓ©z International.

For Canadians who grew up with Cadbury products in the UK, or who have family sending care packages, finding Cadbury Caramel Spread in Canada without paying international shipping is the kind of small win that matters. It turns up in searches for British spreads, UK chocolate spreads, and Cadbury products available in Canada, which is exactly where The Great British Shop comes in.

The jar is 400g, which is a solid pantry size: enough to last a few weeks of reasonable use without feeling like a commitment. It stores at room temperature, needs no refrigeration before opening, and is suitable for vegetarians. The format is a straightforward spreadable jar, not a sauce or a syrup, so it behaves on toast, crumpets, or a spoon the way you would expect.

If Cadbury Caramel Spread has you thinking about the wider range, the Cadbury in Canada collection covers the broader spread of bars, biscuits, and drinks available here.

It ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Cambridge or Moncton, there is no overseas parcel wait involved. A jar in the cupboard is a small but reliable piece of home.
