About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Mrs Darlington's Christmas Preserve

About Mrs Darlington's Christmas Preserve

Christmas morning, the toast is on, and somebody asks if there is anything more exciting than marmalade in the cupboard. There is now.

Mrs Darlington's A Very Merry Christmas Preserve is a festive jar from a family jam maker in Cheshire. It is the kind that turns up on a British Christmas breakfast table and gets scraped right down to the bottom by Boxing Day.

Hot buttered toast, a warm scone, or sitting beside the cheeseboard at the hour when everyone swears they could not eat another thing. They always do.

This is the UK jar, and it ships from within Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Mrs Darlington's Christmas Preserve

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 340g jar, a good size for Christmas breakfasts across the holidays, provided nobody gets to it with a spoon first.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. A Christmas jar from a British jam maker says a lot more than a card, and it travels well tucked into a hamper with some tea.

Q: What do people actually eat it with?

A: Toast and crumpets on Christmas morning, scones in the afternoon, and cheese and crackers on Boxing Day evening. It is not fussy.

More about Mrs Darlington's Christmas Preserve

The British cupboard has a jar for nearly every occasion, and Christmas gets its own. Seasonal preserves are a small, quiet tradition at home: they appear on the shelves once the decorations go up and are gone again soon after the new year.

If you grew up with a British Christmas, the breakfast table is half the memory. The paper hats are still on from the night before, the kettle is going, and there is a jar out that only comes out once a year. That is what people in Canada are after when they go looking for British Christmas food.

It is a standard 340g jar, which keeps happily in the cupboard until it is opened and then lives in the fridge like any other preserve. People spread it on toast and crumpets, spoon it onto scones, or put it out with cheese and crackers for the Boxing Day graze.

Mrs Darlington's is better known for its everyday jams, marmalades, curds and chutneys, so this sits nicely alongside them. It goes in a basket with a box of proper tea and some crumpets, as a Christmas gift for someone who misses home.
