British Sweets in Canada
Sherbet, toffees, Jelly Babies and a few things your fillings should hear about.
About this collection
You know how this goes. You add one bag of Wine Gums, spot the Sherbet Fountain, then remember Polos, Jelly Babies and those pear drops you had not thought about in years. Suddenly it is no longer a small order. Completely normal behaviour.
These are the bits people keep in desk drawers, glove boxes and kitchen tins, then quietly replace before anyone notices. A few for yourself, a few to share if you are feeling unusually generous, and maybe one extra bag of toffees or fudge because running out is irritating.
Call them British sweets or British candy; either way, the bag was apparently meant to last longer. Sherbet, fruit gums, boiled sweets and fudge make very different demands on your patience. Choosing the texture is half the business. Leaving the packet alone is the other half.
British sweets for the pocket money you now earn yourself
The advantage of being a grown-up is that nobody needs to approve your sweet selection. The disadvantage is that you are now the person explaining why the bag is empty. British sweets remain very good at finding that gap in the arrangements.
We bring boiled sweets, chews, sherbet and old sweetshop favourites to our Halifax shop. Start with the texture you remember, a flavour you have missed, or the one you could never persuade anyone else to swap. There is no need to build the entire pick-and-mix in one go.
The boiled sweet favourites
Rhubarb & Custard and Blackcurrant & Liquorice offer two very different sweetshop combinations. Mint Humbugs add a minty outside and chewy centre. This is the part of the shelf where choosing a flavour matters.

View full detailsWhere can I buy British candy in Canada?
We call them sweets, and we have plenty. Bonds, Barratt, Rowntree’s, Simpkins and Walker’s Nonsuch all come through our Halifax shop and on across Canada, from boiled sweets and sherbet to chews and toffees, so the old corner shop is back within reach.
What is inside a Mint Humbug?
The Bonds Mint Humbugs listed here are mint-flavoured boiled sweets with a chewy toffee centre. They offer both the hard outer sweet and a softer middle, rather than being plain mints all the way through.
Can you still buy Sherbet Fountains?
You can, complete with the tube of sharp, fizzy sherbet and the liquorice stick people have argued over for generations. Barratt Dip Dab is there too if you prefer lemon sherbet with a strawberry-flavoured lolly to dip in it.
Where can I buy English toffee?
Walker’s Nonsuch is the name to look for, and we send it from Halifax. English Creamy Toffee is rich, chewy and buttery, the assorted bag adds chocolate eclairs to the mix, and the Treacle Toffees are there for anyone after something darker.
