British Aunt Bessie’s in Canada

Some brands are about treats, and some are about making Sunday dinner feel like Sunday dinner again. Aunt Bessie’s sits firmly in the second camp. This collection brings together the store cupboard helpers that sit behind a proper roast, a winter stew and a pudding afterwards: Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Pudding Mix, Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix, Hearty Dumpling Mix, Crumble Mix and Shortcrust Pastry Mix. They are useful for anyone who grew up with a British roast and misses it, and just as handy for Canadians who have heard about Yorkshire puddings and want to see what the fuss is about. Everything is shipped from Canada by The Great British Shop.

Yorkshire puddings, stuffing and the rest of the roast

A roast without Yorkshires tends to feel like it is missing a member of the family. Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Pudding Mix in the 120g pack is the easy route to having them on the table, ready to soak up gravy. Next to it, the 240g Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix covers the other side of the plate, whether it goes alongside chicken, pork or turkey, or simply gets eaten straight from the dish by whoever is carving. Between the two, a Sunday lunch in Calgary or Moncton can look a lot more like one back home.

Dumplings, crumble and pastry for colder days

This is where the collection earns its place through the winter. The 140g Hearty Dumpling Mix is made for dropping into a stew or casserole, the kind of meal that suits a Canadian January rather well. For afters, the 400g Crumble Mix takes care of the topping for whatever fruit is in season or in the freezer, and the 500g Shortcrust Pastry Mix gives you a starting point for pies, tarts and the odd attempt at something more ambitious. It is home cooking with a bit of help, which is often exactly what is needed on a weeknight.
