About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Walkers Crisps Cheese & Onion

About Walkers Crisps Cheese & Onion

If you grew up in the UK, the blue packet means one thing and one thing only: Walkers Cheese & Onion. Not a general category of cheese-flavoured crisp, not an approximation, but that specific tangy, savoury combination that has been sitting in newsagents and lunchboxes for decades and is, frankly, non-negotiable for a lot of people.

This is a six-pack of Walkers Crisps Cheese & Onion, imported from the United Kingdom, with each individual bag giving you that familiar balance of sharp cheese and punchy onion seasoning. The flavour is tangy and savoury in the way that Walkers Cheese & Onion specifically is, which is to say it tastes exactly like you remember it, because it is exactly what you remember.

For British expats in Canada who have spent any time hunting through international food aisles hoping to spot that blue packet, The Great British Shop stocks the genuine UK version so you are not relying on someone to bring it over in their luggage or waiting on a slow parcel from back home. Six bags is enough to feel organised about it, at least briefly.

Walkers Cheese & Onion is suitable for vegetarians, and the range extends well beyond this flavour if you are restocking properly. Ready Salted, Salt & Vinegar, Prawn Cocktail, Smokey Bacon, Marmite and others are all part of the Walkers lineup, though Cheese & Onion is the one most people reach for first.

Frequently asked questions about Walkers Crisps Cheese & Onion

Q: What do Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps taste like?

A: Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps have a savoury, tangy flavour built from cheese powder, dried onion, milk whey, and a touch of dried garlic. The balance is familiar rather than sharp, with the onion doing most of the talking and the cheese rounding it out. It is the kind of flavour that is immediately recognisable to anyone who has ever eaten lunch at a British school, on a train, or standing over a kitchen sink.

Q: Are Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps are suitable for vegetarians. They do contain milk, including dried milk whey, lactose, cheese powder, and whey protein, so they are not suitable for vegans or anyone avoiding dairy. The seasoning also contains no added MSG or artificial colours. The may-contain allergens listed are wheat, gluten, barley, soya, celery, and mustard.

Q: Why is the blue packet the one British expats in Canada specifically look for?

A: Walkers Cheese & Onion comes in the blue packet, which is the opposite of most other crisp brands where blue means salt. That small, stubbornly British quirk is part of what makes it so specific to people who grew up with it. The six-pack format also makes it practical for lunchboxes or sharing, and because it is the genuine UK version made with British potatoes and imported from the United Kingdom, it is the one that actually tastes the way people remember.

More about Walkers Crisps Cheese & Onion

Walkers Cheese & Onion sits at the centre of the British crisps category the way few snacks manage anywhere. Walkers is the dominant crisp brand in the UK, and Cheese & Onion is consistently among its most recognised flavours, distinguished partly by the fact that Walkers puts Cheese & Onion in a blue packet where most other British brands use blue for Salt & Vinegar. That small, stubborn reversal is the kind of thing British people feel strongly about.

For Canadians who spent time in the UK, or grew up in a British household, finding that specific flavour in Canada is not always straightforward. The craving is not really for a cheese crisp in general; it is for this one, which is why people search specifically for Walkers crisps in Canada rather than settling for whatever is on the shelf.

This is a six-pack, so each box gives you a reasonable run of bags rather than a single portion. The individual bags store easily in a cupboard and the six-pack format makes them practical for packed lunches, sharing, or simply rationing yourself sensibly. Suitable for vegetarians, and best kept in a cool, dry place.

Walkers produces a wide range of flavours beyond Cheese & Onion, including Ready Salted, Salt & Vinegar, Prawn Cocktail, Smokey Bacon and Marmite, among others. The full Walkers in Canada range is stocked here, alongside other British crisps and snacks for anyone rebuilding a proper British snack cupboard.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Burlington or Halifax, the parcel is not crossing an ocean to reach you. That matters when the thing you are ordering is a crisp.

What our customers say

I work close-by in Bayer’s Lake and love to pop in for a healthy and delicious lunch when I don’t bring one from home! I’ve had over 10 flavours of the pies, and tried almost every sweet they make. I adore this place, from the amazing food, to the nostalgic candies and British goods they carry, and especially the wonderful staff who always greet me by name and ask how Im doing every time I come in. My Papa was born and raised in England and loved to share tastes of home with his whole family, I wish he was able to see this place, he would’ve been delighted ❀️❀️❀️
