About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Shaws Fig & Honey Chutney

About Shaws Fig & Honey Chutney

Cheese and a cracker is a snack. Add a spoon of Shaws Fig & Honey Chutney and it turns into lunch.

It is a British chutney, dark, sweet and sticky, the kind of jar that lives in the fridge door next to the pickle and somehow gets reached for first.

You notice it is missing on a Saturday afternoon. The cheddar is out, the bread is fresh, and the plate still looks a bit bare.

Spread it thick. Nobody is counting, and if they are, they are not saying.

Frequently asked questions about Shaws Fig & Honey Chutney

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: Yes, it is the British jar, made in the United Kingdom, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How much is in the jar?

A: It is a 195g jar. That covers a few cheese boards and a good stack of sandwiches, depending on how heavy your spoon is.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Put it next to a decent cheddar and some crackers and you have handed someone a British lunch they have not had in years.

Q: What do people eat it with?

A: Cheese first, always. After that, cold meats, pork pie, sausage rolls and pΓ’tΓ© on toast all do very nicely.

More about Shaws Fig & Honey Chutney

Chutney is the quiet backbone of British eating. It turns up beside the ploughman's, next to the pork pie, on the side of the cheese board and inside more cheese sandwiches than anyone could count. Fig and honey is the sweeter, richer end of the shelf.

People in Canada search for it by name because they want the exact jar they remember, the one that went on the toasted cheese at a mate's house or came out with the cold cuts on a Sunday evening. Memory is specific like that.

It comes in a 195g jar, which is enough for a few good cheese boards and a run of sandwiches without lurking in the fridge for months. Unopened, it sits happily in the cupboard; once it is open, it goes in the fridge like any chutney. Try it with a strong cheddar, cold ham, a sausage roll or a slab of pΓ’tΓ© on toast.

It rarely travels alone. Most people pick it up alongside a proper pickle, some oatcakes or crackers and whatever cheese they have been thinking about all week, and a well stocked fridge door is the result.
