About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Sharwood's Hot Curry Powder

About Sharwood's Hot Curry Powder

Some curries start with a jar of sauce. The ones you remember from a British kitchen usually started with a spoonful of Sharwood's Hot Curry Powder, and somebody saying "that'll do" before adding another.

This is the hot one. Not the gentle stuff kept back for visitors. This is the one that warms the back of your neck by the third mouthful and has everyone reaching for the water while insisting they are fine.

Stir it into mince, a pan of softened onions or last night's leftover chicken, and the whole house smells like a Friday night back home.

It is the UK product, and it ships from within Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Sharwood's Hot Curry Powder

Q: How hot is it really?

A: Hot enough to earn the name. It is the step up from mild, so start with less than you think and add more once you have tasted it.

Q: How much is in the pack?

A: It is 102g of powder, which goes further than you would expect, since most curries only need a spoonful or two.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: It is a cheerful one. Pair it with something from the Sharwood's range and you have sent them a whole Friday night.

More about Sharwood's Hot Curry Powder

Curry powder has been a cupboard staple in British homes for generations, and Sharwood's is the name a lot of people grew up seeing on the shelf. It sits in that very British tradition of the home-made curry: quick, a bit improvised, and nearly always better the next day.

People in Canada search for it because the flavour is the one they know. You can follow a recipe to the letter, but if the spice is different, so is the dinner. This is the one that tastes like your mum's version, or your flatmate's, or the one you made at university with whatever was in the fridge.

It is a dry powder, so it keeps happily in the cupboard with the lid on tight, ready when the mood strikes. Fry it off with onions to wake it up, then build from there. A little goes a long way, and the hot version means it.

Sharwood's is known for its curry sauces, chutneys and poppadoms, and plenty of people put together a whole curry night from the range. A jar of mango chutney next to this is never a bad idea.
