About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Rowntree's Randoms Pouch

About Rowntree's Randoms Pouch

Nobody has ever opened a bag of Randoms knowing what was coming out first. That is rather the point.

Rowntree's Randoms are the fruity jelly sweets in shapes that look like they were pulled out of a hat. Half the fun is fishing one out and working out what it is before it goes in your mouth.

Somebody always holds one up and asks what it is meant to be. Nobody ever knows. It gets eaten anyway.

If you grew up passing a bag along the back seat of the car, you already know how fast this pouch empties.

Frequently asked questions about Rowntree's Randoms Pouch

Q: Is this the UK version of Randoms?

A: It is, the British pouch with the British shapes. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada, so there is no waiting on a parcel from the other side of the Atlantic.

Q: How many sweets are in a 120g pouch?

A: Enough to share round a sofa once, and not quite enough to share round it twice. The count changes bag to bag, which is fair enough given the name.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. A bag of Randoms in a parcel tends to get the same reaction as a phone call from your nan: a big grin, then a bit of quiet.

More about Rowntree's Randoms Pouch

Rowntree's sits at the cheerful end of the British sweet shelf, the same family as Fruit Pastilles and Jelly Tots. Randoms are a corner shop regular, the bag grabbed at the till on the way home from school.

People in Canada go looking for them because the shapes are half the memory. The guessing game, the arguments over whether that one is a bike or a teapot, the swap you made because you wanted the other colour. You cannot get that back from a description, only from the bag.

The 120g pouch is a good size to share, or to quietly not share. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard and fold the top over between raids, though in most houses that step never comes up. It goes in the glovebox for long drives, the bag for a film night, or the drawer at work.

Randoms tend to end up in the basket next to other Rowntree's favourites, a tube of Fruit Pastilles or a bag of Jelly Tots, so one sweet craving gets sorted in one go.
