About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Robertson's Mincemeat

About Robertson's Mincemeat

Somebody has to make the mince pies. This jar is how they get away with it.

Robertson's Mincemeat is the filling that turns a sheet of pastry into a plate of mince pies by teatime. Spoon it in, pop the lids on, and let everyone believe you were up at dawn.

If you grew up with a British Christmas, the smell of mince pies warming in the oven is half the day. The other half is working out who ate the last one and blaming the dog.

It is a big jar, too, so there is plenty left for the second batch you will definitely be asked to make.

Frequently asked questions about Robertson's Mincemeat

Q: Is this the UK version of Robertson's Mincemeat?

A: It is, the British jar you remember. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada, so it never has to clear customs on its way to you.

Q: How much mincemeat is in the jar?

A: It is a 635ml jar, a proper size for more than one tray of mince pies. Enough for the first batch and the one everyone demands after.

Q: Is it a good Christmas gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very good, especially for the friend who bakes. Pair it with a Christmas pudding and you have more or less handed them a British Christmas in a box.

Q: What do people make with it besides mince pies?

A: Mince pies come first, every time. After that it goes into tarts, crumbles and the odd sneaky spoonful straight from the jar.

More about Robertson's Mincemeat

Mincemeat is one of those jars that lives at the back of a British cupboard for eleven months, then becomes the most important thing in the kitchen in December. Robertson's is a name most people know from the breakfast table, so it feels right at home on the baking shelf.

Mince pies are the thing a British Christmas in Canada tends to be missing. Pastry you can make anywhere. The filling is the bit that tastes of home, and it is the first thing people go looking for when Christmas away from Britain comes round.

It comes in a generous 635ml jar, which sits quietly in the cupboard until baking day. A heaped teaspoon per pie is the usual rule, and whatever survives the pie tins tends to end up in a tart, a crumble or straight off the spoon.

Robertson's is best known in Britain for its marmalade, Golden Shred above all. Anyone picking up mincemeat usually leaves with a Christmas pudding and a tin of custard as well, because once a British Christmas dinner gets going, one jar is never the end of it.
