About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Mrs Darlington's Festive Bucks Fizz Marmalade

About Mrs Darlington's Festive Bucks Fizz Marmalade

Christmas morning in a British house has a running order. Stockings first, then somebody pours the Bucks Fizz before nine and calls it tradition.

Mrs Darlington's Festive Bucks Fizz Marmalade puts that glass on your toast. It is a Christmas marmalade from a family jam maker in Cheshire, and it knows exactly what morning it was made for.

Spread it thick while the paper is still all over the floor. Spread it again on Boxing Day, when breakfast is whatever is within reach.

If home is a long way off this year, it is a small, sticky bit of a British Christmas, right there on the plate.

Frequently asked questions about Mrs Darlington's Festive Bucks Fizz Marmalade

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is, the same jar you would pick up in Britain. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada, so it never has to clear customs on its way to you.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 340g jar, a standard marmalade jar. Enough for Christmas morning, Boxing Day and a few sneaky slices of toast after that.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: Very good, especially as a Christmas gift for someone who misses home. It is small enough to tuck into a hamper or a stocking and it says Bucks Fizz on the label, which does most of the talking.

Q: What else goes with it?

A: Anything from the British breakfast shelf: a box of proper tea, some crumpets, another jar of something from Mrs Darlington's. Have a look through our jams and marmalades for the rest.

More about Mrs Darlington's Festive Bucks Fizz Marmalade

Marmalade is the British breakfast table's quiet constant: the jar that is always there, next to the butter, in every kitchen you grew up in. A festive one is the jar that only comes out once a year, which is exactly why people remember it.

In Canada, Christmas breakfast tends to drift towards whatever the new household does. This jar pulls it back. One spoonful and it is Christmas morning in Britain again, someone's dad in a paper crown far too early and nobody minding.

It comes in a standard 340g jar, the sort that sits in the cupboard until December and then empties faster than anyone planned. Keep it in the fridge once it is open. It goes on toast and crumpets, and the brave stir a spoonful into a glaze for the Christmas ham.

Mrs Darlington's is a jam, curd and marmalade maker first and foremost, so it sits happily next to the rest of the British breakfast cupboard: proper tea, a jar of lemon curd, and a loaf you can toast without apology.
