About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Lamb & Mint Gravy Granular

About Morrisons Lamb & Mint Gravy Granular

Roast lamb without mint is just a quiet dinner. This fixes that. Morrisons Lamb & Mint Gravy Granules put the gravy and the mint in one jug, which saves a pan and an argument about who forgot the jar.

You know the drill: granules in, boiling water on, stir until it goes glossy and the lumps give up. Then the kitchen smells like a Sunday at your mum's.

It is the one from the supermarket aisle back home, from the Bradford grocer that ended up on high streets everywhere.

Pour it over the lamb, the roast potatoes and anything else that stands still long enough.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Lamb & Mint Gravy Granular

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. This is the Morrisons gravy from the British supermarket shelf, brought over and shipped to you from within Canada, so no begging relatives to pack it in a suitcase.

Q: How big is it?

A: A 200g tub of granules. You spoon out what you need and stir in boiling water, so it goes a good few Sunday roasts before you see the bottom.

Q: What do people have it with?

A: Roast lamb is the obvious one, and the mint is the whole point. It also does sterling work over a shepherd's pie or a plate of chops and mash on a Tuesday when nobody fancied cooking.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: For someone who misses a proper Sunday dinner, yes. It is light, it travels well, and it is the sort of thing a person did not know they missed until the tub turns up.

More about Morrisons Lamb & Mint Gravy Granular

Gravy granules hold up the British roast dinner. Lamb with mint is the pairing everybody grew up with, and this tub of Morrisons own-brand puts the two together so the Sunday table only needs one jug going round.

You can roast a leg of lamb anywhere. The bit people go hunting for in Canada is that particular gravy, the one that tastes like the plate they remember, and a supermarket own brand from home is exactly the sort of thing that never turns up in a suitcase because somebody packed it full of tea instead.

It is 200g of granules, so you make as little or as much as you need. A splash for a weeknight chop, a full jug when the family is round. Close it up afterwards and it sits quietly in the cupboard until the next roast.

Morrisons is one of Britain's big supermarket chains, and its own-label cupboard staples are what plenty of British kitchens actually run on. People tend to put this in the basket next to Yorkshire pudding mix, plus a jar of mint sauce for the purists who insist on both.
