About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Bramley Apple Sauce

About Morrisons Bramley Apple Sauce

Roast pork without apple sauce is just pork. Nobody grew up dreaming about just pork.

Morrisons Bramley Apple Sauce is the jar that turns it back into a Sunday roast. Bramleys are the great British cooking apple, sharp enough to stand up to a slab of crackling and not be bullied by the gravy.

The jar comes out, a polite spoonful goes on the plate, then a second one goes on when you think nobody is looking. Everybody is looking. They want the jar next.

Supermarket own-brand from Bradford, and the taste of a proper roast back home.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Bramley Apple Sauce

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. This is the Morrisons jar from the UK, the same one on the shelf in Bradford, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 280g jar. That covers a few Sunday roasts, or one if your family treats apple sauce as a main course.

Q: What do people eat it with?

A: Roast pork and crackling, first and always. After that, sausages, pork chops and the leftover pork sandwich the next day.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very. Tuck it in a parcel with some gravy granules and mint sauce and you have posted them a Sunday dinner, minus the washing up.

More about Morrisons Bramley Apple Sauce

In Britain, apple sauce has one job and it takes that job seriously: sitting next to the roast pork. It turns up on the Sunday table beside the crackling, the roast potatoes and the gravy boat, and it keeps working on Monday when the leftovers go into a sandwich.

People in Canada go looking for this one because they want the roast to taste the way it did at home. Not a version of it. The jar their mum kept in the cupboard, from the supermarket they used to push a trolley round on a Saturday.

It comes in a 280g jar, which is a handy size for the cupboard and a few roasts' worth, depending on who has hold of the spoon. Keep it in with the other jars and it is ready whenever the pork goes in the oven. It also does a fine job with sausages, a pork chop or a cold cuts plate.

Morrisons makes a whole shelf of own-brand cupboard staples, and apple sauce rarely travels alone. It tends to go in the basket with mint sauce for the lamb weeks, horseradish for the beef weeks and gravy granules for every week.
