About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

About McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

Nobody has ever got excited about a Rich Tea. Then you move across an ocean, and suddenly you are. McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits are the plain, pale, faithful biscuit that lives next to the kettle in half the kitchens in Britain.

It is not trying to impress you. It is trying to survive a dunk, and it knows exactly how long it has. Three seconds, maybe four. Push your luck and you are fishing for it with a teaspoon.

It is the biscuit offered to the plumber, the one in the tin at your nan's, the one you ate six of without noticing. Nobody counts Rich Teas. That is the whole appeal.

Frequently asked questions about McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: Yes. These are McVitie's Rich Tea from the United Kingdom, the same packet you remember, and we ship them from within Canada.

Q: How big is the packet?

A: It is the 300g roll. In theory that lasts a week. In practice, it does not.

Q: Are they good to send as a gift?

A: To the right person, absolutely. Anyone who grew up in Britain will know exactly what a packet of Rich Tea means, and they will put the kettle on before they say thank you.

More about McVitie's Rich Tea Biscuits

Rich Tea sits at the very bottom of the British biscuit pecking order, and that is a compliment. It is the plain one, the dependable one, the biscuit built for dunking rather than showing off. Nobody fights over it. Everybody eats it.

People in Canada go looking for it because a mug of tea without one looks unfinished. If you grew up with a packet by the kettle, you know the exact snap and the exact dunk you are after, so it is McVitie's Rich Tea you type in, not just any plain biscuit.

The 300g packet is the everyday size, the one that lives in the cupboard and gets opened mid-afternoon with good intentions. Fold the end over once it is open and pop it back on the shelf. As for dunking, a Rich Tea gives you about two seconds before half of it ends up at the bottom of the mug. Plan accordingly.

McVitie's also make the Digestive, Hobnobs and Jaffa Cakes, so the Rich Tea rarely travels alone. Most people put it in the basket next to a box of proper tea bags, plus a packet of Digestives for days that call for a bit more ambition.
