About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About McVitie's Club Orange

About McVitie's Club Orange

In a British school lunchbox, a Club Orange was currency. Nobody gave one away. You traded it, and only for something very good.

McVitie's Club Orange is the chunky chocolate biscuit bar with the orange chocolate coat. Each bar is wrapped on its own and thick enough to feel like a proper snack rather than a polite biscuit.

It is the one you saved for the end of lunch, or for the walk home. Then you peeled the wrapper back slowly so it lasted. Open the pack now and you are back at that school bench. The only difference is that nobody can bargain you out of it.

Frequently asked questions about McVitie's Club Orange

Q: Is this the UK Club Orange?

A: Yes, it is the British McVitie's Club Orange, made in the United Kingdom, and we ship it from within Canada. Same bar, same wrapper, same orange.

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is a 154g pack of individually wrapped bars. That is enough to share, if you are feeling generous.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses the UK?

A: Very. Anyone who had one in their lunchbox will know exactly what it is before the wrapper is off.

Q: What else from McVitie's goes well with it?

A: Jaffa Cakes are the obvious companion for orange fans. Digestives and Hobnobs are the classics for dunking in a cup of tea.

More about McVitie's Club Orange

The Club sits in the British chocolate biscuit bar family, the wrapped, chunky sort that goes in a lunchbox, a coat pocket or the biscuit tin at work. The orange one has always had its own fans, and they are loyal.

People in Canada search for it by name because a Club Orange is not a vague craving. It is that bar, that colour of wrapper, that snap of orange with the chocolate. When you have grown up with it, a near enough version simply does not scratch the itch.

This is the 154g pack of individually wrapped bars, so you can hand them out one at a time or ration them for yourself. Keep them somewhere cool and dry in the cupboard, away from the oven, and they will keep their shape. They go with a cup of tea, in a packed lunch, or straight from the wrapper at about four in the afternoon.

If orange and chocolate is your weakness, McVitie's Jaffa Cakes are the natural next stop. For something plainer with your tea, the McVitie's digestive has been sitting next to British kettles for generations.
