About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Lees Meringue Nests

About Lees Meringue Nests

Six little white nests, and pudding is already half done. Lees Meringue Nests are the shortcut British kitchens have quietly leaned on for years: crisp shells you fill with whipped cream and whatever fruit is in the bowl, and nobody asks whether you made them.

Crush one with strawberries and cream and you have Eton mess. Leave it whole and suddenly it is a dinner party. Either way, it looks like effort.

They come from Lees, the Scottish confectioner behind the Macaroon bar, and they taste like Sunday tea at your gran's.

Pretend you made them yourself if you like. Your secret is safe with us.

Frequently asked questions about Lees Meringue Nests

Q: Is this the proper UK version?

A: It is. These are the Lees nests made in the UK, the same ones from the British supermarket shelf, and they ship from us here in Canada.

Q: How many nests are in a pack?

A: Six. Enough for six puddings, or four puddings and two eaten straight from the packet while nobody is looking.

Q: What do people usually fill them with?

A: Whipped cream and fresh fruit is the classic, strawberries if you want to feel like it is June. Crush them up with the same and you have Eton mess, which is really just a nest that has given up.

Q: Do they travel well?

A: Meringue is delicate, so we pack them the way we would want our own packed. Keep them dry when they arrive and they will stay crisp in the cupboard.

More about Lees Meringue Nests

In Britain, a packet of meringue nests lives at the back of the cupboard for the evening someone drops round and pudding has to appear from nowhere. Strawberries and cream in summer, a spoonful of lemon curd when it is grey outside, a scoop of ice cream on a Tuesday because why not.

People who grew up with them know a shop-bought nest is its own thing, not a homemade pavlova trying its best. Crisp all the way through, a little chalky, unapologetically sweet. That exact texture is what sends people searching once they have moved to Canada.

You get six nests in the pack, ready to go straight from the packet. Keep them somewhere dry and they stay crisp in the cupboard. Fill them just before serving, because cream softens meringue faster than you would think, and a soggy nest is nobody's idea of a good evening.

Lees is better known for its Macaroon bars and Snowballs, and it is a rare person who buys the nests without a Macaroon bar sneaking into the basket too. Add a pot of double cream and a punnet of berries and the whole pudding is sorted.
