About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Jacobs Twiglets

About Jacobs Twiglets

They look like something swept up from under a hedge. One taste later, the bowl is somehow empty.

Jacob's Twiglets are the knobbly, dark, savoury sticks that turn up wherever there is a party, a pint or a sofa with a film on. The flavour is sharp and savoury, and people either love it or have not tried it properly yet.

If you grew up with a bowl of them on the coffee table, you already know why you are here. This is the UK bag, and it ships from within Canada.

Keep it away from the in-laws. They will finish it and deny all knowledge.

Frequently asked questions about Jacobs Twiglets

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 105g bag. Enough for a bowl on the table, or one person and a film, which is how it usually goes.

Q: What do Twiglets actually taste like?

A: Savoury, sharp and a bit dark, with a crunch that snaps. If you have had them before, you know. If you have not, there is only one way to find out.

Q: Are they good to send as a gift?

A: For anyone who grew up in Britain, a bag of Twiglets is a better present than most things in a box. Pop them in with some cheese and crackers and you will be thanked loudly.

More about Jacobs Twiglets

Twiglets live in that corner of the British snack cupboard kept for things that are not quite crisps and not quite biscuits. They come out with drinks, at birthdays and whenever somebody says they will just put a few bits out.

They are hard to explain to anyone who has never had one, which is exactly why you end up searching for them. Saying "savoury knobbly sticks" gets you blank looks. Finding the actual bag in Canada saves the explaining.

The 105g bag is a sharing size, in theory. Tip them into a bowl and they hold their crunch for the evening; fold the top over and keep the rest in a cool, dry cupboard, assuming there is a rest. They go with cheese, a cold beer or a cup of tea, depending on the hour.

Jacob's is also the name on the cream crackers that hold up half the British cheeseboard, so a packet of those beside the Twiglets is the obvious order. Add a wedge of cheddar and a jar of pickle and the evening has sorted itself out.
