About Hartleys Blackcurrant Jelly

About Hartleys Blackcurrant Jelly

Every British child has eaten a raw cube of jelly straight from the packet. Very few got caught the first time.

Hartley's Blackcurrant Jelly is the proper tablet: a block of squares you snap apart, melt down with boiling water and leave in the fridge while you check on it far too often.

Blackcurrant is the grown-up end of the jelly shelf, deep purple and a bit sharp, the colour of every birthday party tea that finished with jelly and ice cream.

It wobbles. It always has. That is rather the point.

Frequently asked questions about Hartleys Blackcurrant Jelly

Q: Is this the UK version of Hartley's jelly?

A: Yes, it is the British tablet made in the UK, the one you remember, and we ship it from within Canada.

Q: How do I make it up?

A: Snap the tablet into cubes, dissolve them in boiling water, top up with cold and leave it in the fridge to set. Opening the fridge every ten minutes does not speed it up, though everyone tries.

Q: Can you really eat the cubes straight from the packet?

A: People have been doing it for generations, usually when nobody is looking. We could not possibly comment on who.

Q: What do people make with it?

A: Jelly and ice cream, mostly, and the jelly layer of a trifle. Blackcurrant gives you that deep purple layer that looks very impressive in a glass bowl.

More about Hartleys Blackcurrant Jelly

Jelly is one of the quiet pillars of British pudding. It holds up a trifle, turns up at every children's party and gets set in a mould by someone who swears it will come out clean this time.

Over here, jelly is something you spread on toast, which makes asking for it in a shop a confusing conversation. So people search for it by name, Hartley's and blackcurrant, because that is the one they actually mean.

Each pack is a single tablet of jelly cubes, enough for a proper bowlful, and it sits happily in the cupboard until somebody announces a trifle. Break it up, dissolve it in boiling water, top up with cold and give it a few hours in the fridge. Patience is the only tricky part.

Hartley's is better known in Britain for its jam, so a jar of that tends to end up in the same basket. For trifle you will want custard and sponge fingers too, and a spoon long enough to reach the bottom layer.
