About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Hartley's Strawberry Seedless Jam

About Hartley's Strawberry Seedless Jam

Jam on toast is a small thing until you are a long way from the jar you grew up with. Hartley's Strawberry Seedless Jam is that jar.

Smooth, bright red and spread far too thick on hot buttered toast, it is the jam from the kitchen table, the lunchbox sandwich and the Victoria sponge somebody's nan made every single birthday.

It is the proper UK jar, and it ships from within Canada, so the toast can stop waiting.

One warning: the spoon goes in for the toast and comes out for nobody's toast in particular. Everyone does it. Nobody admits it.

Frequently asked questions about Hartley's Strawberry Seedless Jam

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 340g glass jar, which is a good few weeks of toast, or one very ambitious afternoon of scones.

Q: Will a glass jar survive the post?

A: We pack it to travel, wrapped up properly so it reaches you as a jar of jam and not a box of regret.

Q: Is it any good for baking?

A: It is the classic filling for a Victoria sponge, and being smooth it spreads evenly between the layers. Jam tarts work too, if you can stop eating it off the spoon first.

Q: Does it make a decent gift?

A: For someone who misses home, a jar of the jam they grew up with lands better than most presents. Pair it with some proper tea and you have a very happy recipient.

More about Hartley's Strawberry Seedless Jam

Strawberry is the default jam in Britain. Ask for jam with your scones and nobody asks which one. Hartley's has sat on British supermarket shelves for so long that the label feels like part of the furniture.

People in Canada search for it by name because the name is the point. You want the one that tastes like a Saturday breakfast back home, and near enough will not do. Usually it is wanted for a cream tea, a jam sandwich for a homesick child, or simply the toast.

It comes in a 340g glass jar that lives in the cupboard until it is opened; after that, follow what the jar tells you. Seedless means smooth, so it spreads evenly, sandwiches neatly into a sponge and sits politely on a scone instead of sliding off it.

In Britain, Hartley's is just as well known for jelly, the wobbly sort from every children's party, and for marmalade. Alongside the jam, people tend to pick up a box of proper tea and whatever they need for the scones.
