About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Galaxy Smooth Milk

About Galaxy Smooth Milk

Nobody has ever eaten half a Galaxy and saved the rest for later. Nobody honest, anyway.

Galaxy Smooth Milk is the bar that made "silky" a reasonable thing to say about chocolate. It snaps, it melts, and then it is gone, usually a good deal faster than you planned.

It is the one from the corner shop, the petrol station and the bottom of a school bag. The bar you grabbed at the till without even looking.

It is the UK bar, sent from within Canada, so nobody has to smuggle one home in a suitcase again.

Frequently asked questions about Galaxy Smooth Milk

Q: How big is the bar?

A: It is a 42g single bar, the classic grab-it-at-the-till size. Enough for one person, assuming that person has some self-control.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Tuck a couple in with a box of tea and you have sent a small piece of a British corner shop, no plane ticket required.

Q: How should I keep it?

A: Somewhere cool and dry, out of the sun and away from heaters. A cupboard does the job, as long as you remember which cupboard.

More about Galaxy Smooth Milk

In Britain, Galaxy sits right in the middle of the milk chocolate bars everyone grew up with. People rarely talk about what it tastes like. They talk about how it feels, which tells you most of what you need to know.

Memory is specific. When you have spent years reaching for a Galaxy without thinking, you want that exact bar, that exact melt, not something roughly in the neighbourhood. So people in Canada type the name in word for word, and fair enough.

This is the single 42g bar, the one-person size, built for a coat pocket, a desk drawer or the walk home. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, well away from the radiator and the sunny windowsill, and it will sit happily in the cupboard until somebody finds it. Somebody always finds it.

Most people do not stop at one. A few bars tend to go in the basket alongside a box of proper British tea and a packet of biscuits for dunking, which is roughly how an afternoon in a British kitchen has always gone.
