About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury Wispa Gold

About Cadbury Wispa Gold

Some chocolate bars you eat. Wispa Gold you bargain with, one more bite, then one more, until the wrapper is just a wrapper.

Cadbury Wispa Gold is the bubbly Wispa with a layer of caramel through it, and if you grew up with one in your school bag, you remember exactly how that first bite gives way.

The bubbles go soft, the caramel holds on, and the kettle has not even boiled. Nobody has ever saved half for later. People say they will.

This is the UK bar, and it ships from within Canada, so you can stop asking visiting relatives to leave room in the suitcase.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury Wispa Gold

Q: How big is a Wispa Gold?

A: It is a single 48g bar, the standard one you would grab from a British corner shop. One sitting, realistically.

Q: What is the difference between Wispa and Wispa Gold?

A: The original Wispa is all bubbly Cadbury chocolate. Wispa Gold adds a layer of caramel, which is the whole reason people go looking for it.

Q: Does it make a good gift for someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. Tuck one in with a card or a parcel and watch them pretend they are going to share it.

Q: What else from Cadbury do people buy with it?

A: Dairy Milk, Twirl and Crunchie are the usual companions. It is hard to stop at one bar once the nostalgia gets going.

More about Cadbury Wispa Gold

In Britain, Wispa Gold lives at the newsagent's counter, right where you reach for it on the way out with a paper and a pint of milk. It is the Wispa for people who looked at a perfectly good bubbly bar and thought it could do with some caramel.

Once you have moved away, it is the sort of thing you think about at odd moments. A long drive, a grey afternoon, a cup of tea that feels unfinished. That is usually when the search starts.

It comes as a single 48g bar, one person's worth, though it is polite to pretend otherwise. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard out of the sun. The fridge is a matter of personal conviction: some swear a chilled one snaps better, others call that a crime against the bubbles.

People rarely stop at one Cadbury bar. Wispa Gold tends to land in the basket next to a Dairy Milk, a Twirl or a Crunchie, which is less a shopping list and more a small reunion.
